Hamper inspiration needed

This yr Mum's doing the dinner, so Mum, step-dad, Me and my 3 kids, 10yr old brother and older sister will be eating at my mums, leaving my Dad on his own for Christmas which makes me feel really guilty (he says its fine he will just have a jam sandwich......hope he was kidding!!)

So last night I decided to do him a hamper but a little bit stuck for ideas, he does like his food, including some of the more unusual "stuff" saw some Jams, Chutneys etc in town today (a little bit expensive though) he likes Port and Cheese, and I thought about some kind of crackers/biscuits, what else?? He doesnt read much, no point getting a dvd, once he's watched it he wont bother again, Hat and gloves maybe, socks no good he struggles to get them on having arthitis.

Want to make it as Christmassy as poss, never done a Hamper before so any hints and tips are welcome (even if they seem obvious to you!!)

Would be nice to do a "Christmas dinner for 1" hamper where everything is ready to throw in the steamer/oven but I dont think that will keep very long!! Unless I pass my driving test this Friday then I will be able to take it to him on christmas morning!!!

TIA

Good luck with the driving test.
We did my MIL a hamper a few years ago and just filled it with things we knew she loved. All the supermarkets do nice biscuits and crackers in their finest ranges and their in lovely boxes. I remember getting some mini pots of jam, special seafood in jars (rollmops!), maybe a homemade-type tin of christmassy soup. What about a hand made cracker?
    Hope these ideas help

  • When I was in M&S the other day buying Christmas fragrance washing up liquid, I noticed they has lots of things including Christmas tea, Christmas coffee, Christmas chutney. Also Co-op normally do a pack of chocolate biscuits in Christmas tree shapes.
...it is not of more importance than daily life, which I have an enduring wish to make as useful and beautiful as possible.

  • This may seem like a strange suggestion for things like this, but go to Garden Centres!!

We usually go to them and find that there are local HM jams, chutneys, and lots of lovely little things which are not quite run of the mill. They're usually with all the christmas decorations. :rudolf:

I'm not saying they're cheap, but they're certainly different. We always find lots of lovely things for my grandma's hamper.
How long til pay day?

  • I'm doing a box for my great Uncle and putting in lots of little treats that he wouldn't go out and buy for himself.

I've just ordered online at Tesco, a Tesco Rich Fruit Mini Gift Cake they are only 99p and decorated with either a Christmas tree, snowman, a bear or father Christmas, just a bit of fun really as I know he wouldn't eat a big Christmas cake. Also put in a jar of his favourite stem ginger, peanuts, cheese footballs, twiglets, and Worthers sweets and will pick up some nice jam/marmalade.

Ive made a list of ideas (mainly yours :o ) cant believe I forgot christmas cake!!!

Gonna get a 2007 organiser -I know this is something he wont buy himself but will use, and he broke his Grandad mug recently (arthitis again) so I can get another and maybe some hot chocolate and those Christmas tea's and coffee's someone here mentioned.

    Thanks

I've just been to my local garden centre (to look for a terracotta pot- which they didn't have?!) and they have the most amazing display of everything christmassy!!!
If you are looking for decorations, baubles, biscuits, different chocolate, jams etc etc etc.....this is the place to go. It was all reasonably priced and it was not what you have already seen 100 times in the supermarkets.
