HELP! Cats picking my rug

Options
Hi there,

Does anyone know how to stop the cats picking the rug, we have had it for about a month and they will not give up. We chase, shout, throw cushions so they know they should not be doing it. I keep picking bits of it out when they tug them through, at this rate there will be nothing left in six months. Its pure wool tufted and really thick so you cant see where individual strands have came from but its doing my head in, it cost loads and I only bought it as I thought it would last years.

They have scratching posts.

It's possible to buy a spray to deter cats from scratching furniture & stuff around the home. Try your local pet shop or somewhere like Wilkinson's.

Other than that if you have a plant spray bottle & spray the cats with water whenever you catch them doing it this may deter them after a while.

Cats, they are lovely, but don't you just wish sometimes they would listen to you. :rotfl:
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

The spray bottle method is very effective in modifying unwanted behaviour but make sure they don't realise it's you doing it or if they're determined enough, they'll wait till your out of sight before picking it.

With the rug being wool, you'll obviously have to be careful with any sprays or powders you use on it as deterrent incase it damages it anyway. The only other thing I can think of is a light sprinkling of household ground black pepper. I know it's totally different but my dog kept digging up the shingle by our front door to get the ants. It took a few days and re-applications before he left it alone .... the only harm it's done to him is that he automatically sneezes whenever he see's an ant  :rotfl: .

    Good luck!

Our cat ignores the sprays from the pets shop etc. Thinks it means scratch here more. She likes water, goes and sits under the tap so the waterpistol didnt work.

We think its because shes lazy she will go for the nearest thing when she wants to scratch. We even tried putting marmite on something she scratches so she wouldnt do it, she now likes marmite on toast! We just found that we needed a scrap of tough hard wearing carpet (like they have at schools) and put that near the thing she likes scratching then gradually move it away to the scratching post. It seems to work quite well, she occasionally laspes and something wanged in her direction normally then does the trick!
