Hi All, I was hoping somebody could help me out please! I have just made vegetable soup using stock from gammon I cooked yesterday and I forgot and added salt and now it is too salty!!! :madDoes anybody know what I can add to the soup to take away the excess salt? I know there is something, but cannot for the life of me think what it is. Thank you very much for any help you can give in rescuing my family's tea for tomorrow nite!! :A

Hi carry on simmering it, but put a raw potato in.. It will absorb the excess salt...:D0

then don't forget to throw the potato away, as it'll be really salty..0

Adding cream or unsalted tomatoes will also help reduce saltiness. (Though you may not want the cream if you're trying to lose weight
)

You may also want to try adding a little brown sugar, or a little vinegar. if you go carefully tasting as you go. In the same way the potatoe blots up the salt so will cooked rice if you have any about. (Well providing you haven't oversalted the rice as well)

Particularly as the current recommended maximum salt intake recommendations are double the amount that is sensible it's too easy to overdo the salt.

Talking of too much salt anybody else hate those public health adverts that say, "Your food can tell you how much salt it has in it" and that you should read the nutrition information on the back of the packet? It really pees me off. I't makes me yell at the screen, "MY food can't tell me how much salt it has in it. It doesn't come in packets". Which is clearly a lie because many ingredients such as cans of tomatoes, rice and pasta do indeed come in packets. Still, I dare say you get my point.0
