Granny Squares???

I have some unravelled wool and want to make a small 'Granny Square' blanket.
I've forgotten how to make them :( and don't have an old one about to copy the square.
Can anyone please tell me how to make one?
I know I need to start with a small chain circle, and do an increase on the corner, but that's about all I can remember.
Help please???
LL

How about this one? I crochet but don't really do traditional granny squares. There's loads of tutorials out there though.

  • Hi gang
Every winter I knit a few squares. I don't know how to crochet - and I've got squares in all types of knit-stitches. Thing is, I don't really know how to put them together. Just sewing seems a bit dull. Also, because of the types of stitches, some of them are really stretchy. Any ideas? They are in double-knit and about 12" square.

Ohhhhh casting my mind back to my childhood days when my Nanna taught me how to crotchet

I think you do a 6 loop chain

Then work 3 lines/blocks (can't remember what they're called, double double summink or other) and then do 3 chain to create the corner, do this four times times and it gives you your basic square...............kinda.........

Argh! I can see it in my head but I can't remember what the stitches are called!

    Good luck anyway :p

Yeah course it is!! Might be a bit more tricky as if you make a mistake you'll need to know where to look up the answer. I learnt to crochet from a book (although i could already knit and follow knitting patterns). I learnt to make beaded jewellery from books and magazines too!

Go for it, you never know unless you try!! :D

haleyhop there are tons of online tutorials out there, just google for them. If you are looking for books then I can really recommend the stitch'n'!!!!! books by Debbie Stoller, there are knit and crochet ones, they are not too expensive and IMO really easy to understand. Personally if I wanted to learn I'd rather sit there with a book on my lap.

I remember joining squares together using crochet. Now I know you say you can't crochet but its really easy - you could teach yourself. I taught myself from a book when I was 8 or 9 (cos my mother wasn't much good at that type of thing!)

For those of you who knit, I was taught how to make a blanket from knitted squares at school.

Most people seem to just knit squares, but you get a MUCH better result if you knit diagonally.

Just cast on 1 stitch, and on each row increase 1 stitch at either end until the diagonal end is 6" (or whatever size of square you are aiming for) - then decrease one stitch at each end.

Result - a firmer and more hard-wearing blanket (as it's always being stretched in different directions from the direction it was knitted in, IYSWIM) :D
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).
