Old currants - safe to use?

Just made a stir and simmer Christmas cake. Used sultanas dated BBE Aug '06, raisins and currants. However, currants were dated BBE Oct '05:eek:. Have I sentenced as all to a bout of dicky tummy over the xmas hols, or do you think the copious amount of brandy used will deter any bugs?

Comments

  • IMHO currants and raisins NEVER go off. BBE is not the same as 'use by'. They have been dried (they may be a bit dried out, but you're going to sort that out with the brandy, right? :p) and are full of a good preservative - sugar!

If you are worried about the resulting cake, I volunteer to be your taster! :D

hazzie123, that's a good idea, but my in-laws are ok, so can't do that to them. There are a few people though that I might volunteer for 'first taste'!!
  • I made an 3 Xmas cakes last year for friends and family and the dried fruit was out of date by 10 months and the peel...and was fine. I soaked before hand anyway, but did not have any problems.

    Id say go for it.
