On probation but signed off sick

I have been at my job for 2 months and am on 6 months probation. I have been having some health problems and today the doctor has signed me off sick for 4 weeks, but will probably extend that after the 4 weeks are up.
Obviously work are not going to be too happy about this (am not due to work until Friday this week so have not told them yet). I am pretty sure they pay sick pay for a certain period but am not sure about the fact I am on probation. I am not that happy in the job anyway so am not sure whether to hand my notice in while I am off sick. The main problem is that I cannot afford to be without any income. So should I take any sick pay and see what they do. If they sack me would I be entitled to incapacity benefit? Or if I did the decent thing and handed in my notice what would I be entitled to? Could I still claim incapacity? I do intend finding another job but until my health problems are resolved there is not a lot I can do

I was not asked any questions about my health but the problem I have now is something which has just started. I don't really want to go into details about the health problem but it is something which is likely to go on for quite a while (several months at least) and I really do not think my employer is likely to carrying on paying sick pay indefinitely but I am not sure where I would stand if they stopped it.
Also because I am thinking of leaving I do feel guilty taking any sick pay from them but, as I said, I cannot afford to have no money coming in.The world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0
