i've been a proper old style money saver with my free fruit....

Options
I am feeling very smug and virtuous as this week I have collected:

6lb golden cherry plums from the local park (made 4 jars of jam plus a plum crumble)
and from local "green space" ancient orchard site I have just collected
4 eating apples
3lb bramley apples
1.5lb blackberries
approx 5lb crab apples to make a years supply of jelly for roast dinners

What have you collected from the hedgerows this summer like in the old "dig for victory" days?

Anyone remember the slogan which used to tell housewives to collect produce from the hedgerows - I read it in my son's book the other day but can't remember now....

Vast quanties of cherry plums and still picking!! Mainly red as the yellow ones are too high to reach, made 6 jars of jam so far. Blackberries, although we have to look around as alot of them are still green around here. DH has come home with a carrier bag full of cooking apples from his brothers OH's garden(her mum doesn't pick them or use them!!). Elderberries so we can make cordial from them and we are waiting for the hazelnuts to ripen as we have hundreds of hazelnut trees in our villlage. I'm always looking to see whats growing on trees just incase it's edible!!

Picked 10lbs of blackberries the other day which have now been turned into blackberry and blackberry/apple pies, crumbles and fruit pasties for the freezer, and 11 jars of blackberry, apple and pear jam.

Got my eye on a couple of elderberry bushes with intentions of making chutney and may have a go at some cordial/syrup stuff I saw on River Cottage once.

i made some mint jelly earlier in the summer from wild mint and brought some home which is now growing in a tub.

Have also found a bay tree growing in grounds of flats where I live so no more bay leaves to buy now.

Plus have been kept supplied with tomatoes and cukes by my os mum, now got my beady eyes on her enormous rhubarb:rolleyes:
Maybe I will bribe her with a few jars of jam, she only made pies with her blackberries.:D

No one else round here seems interested in picking any of this fruit, its such a shame to see it going to waste. I am going back tomorrow for more blackberries:eek: I will find some use for them - must go and peek at some recipes.

    Hi,
We have loads of blackberries in our garden, but I don't have any recipes so they will go to waste if we can't eat them all fresh.

Can anyone post any recipes, also have some Gala apples (not freebies, Tescos!) the kids have not bothered with yet - or do I have to use cooking apples? As you can tell I do not cook such things usually but am keen to give it a go!

I've made an apple and blackberry crumble and frozen some more blackberries from the allotment, and someone gave me a punnet of greengages from their allotment. Not exactly hedgerow but close enough. Got loads of blackberries at the bottom of the garden but I have to fight my way through bindweed and rubble first to get to them. I'm watching some elderberries too which are just ripening.

Last year I made blackberry icecream with the berries, some cream, some milk powder and some sugar. Didn't follow a recipe - just made it up. It lasted all of an afternoon once the stepkids discovered it.

:j blackberry ice cream sounds lovely, must look in asda tomorrow see if there is any reduced cream, usually loads and I never want it.

DD suggested pureeing some and layering with ice cream and cream to make a sundae,or adding to blackcurrant jelly.
OH wants more blackberry and apple pies......lots more:D, and wants to use some to add to his cereal/porridge.
I have decided to make a blackberry and pear pavlova for after tea tomorrow.

Just hope it is not raining in the morning  as i still have to pick them.

Hi, i was going to give you a couple of recipes but DS wants to use the internet. so i will do that later on today when he's off the internet. You could
open freeze the Blackberries and then use them in Blackberry and apple crumble or Blackberry and apple Jam. I have frozen about 8 Ib of blackberries so far.And still have a bout 2 1bs from last year in the freezer. Have to go, am being pestered.
