DVD free trials - one per household?

I've used a couple of the free dvd trials like Lovefilm very successfully, and I'm just wondering how they tell who has already had a free trial or not, ie do they look at your email address or main address or what?
I don't want to sign up to a free trial for one of the services I have already used and then find out they'll charge me because I already had the free period (if you see what I mean).
I can't really be bothered to keep a list of the people I have already used, and I presume that if I have already had the trial they will just refuse to accept me for another one - I just wondered if anyone had any experience of this?
