if you are insulin dependant most health authorities will provide free via their diabetic centre or diabetic nurse specialist if your lucky some gp practice nurses
most machine companies will do you good deal too even free but check if your gp prescribes those type of sticks to use in machines or itll cost u a fortune .
the companies want u to have their machine as they make their money on the test strips which totals lots of cash over a year
specific strips to each maker .
the machine your talking about is very good gives results in seconds my tpct gives this to all district nurses its a great improvement on the old ones:beer:

from the site... DATED = "This meter is new, but the test strips and control solutions may be out of date."

Its a pity they need proof, my old fella's diabetic and was told by his GP it can be hereditary. Would have been ideal for me too keep tabs on whats going on!

mark_ice get you old fella to get it for you.

As said before if you are diabetic you will most likely get one or more of these free from you health autority and possibly even the company that makes them.
This is why i am sometimes surprised to see that places actually sell these due to this. but i suppose it depends on the health autority. Your looking at about £5 or there abouts for the second one mentioned and probably not much more for the first.
  • the companies who market these meters at silly prices,
    because the strips are extortionate
and some people become obsessed with taking their blood glucose
resulting in millions of pound squandered by the nhs.
they are only of use for hyop-s ie very low sugars
or to confirm very high levels and they should then consult with gp team
The definitive test is the HBA1 lab blood test
    below 7% good
    7-10% could do better
    > 10% poor control

A lot of Type 2 Diabetics are treated with Diet & Exercise to start with but should also be checking their blood numbers - how are they going to prove that to the company?

I hate companies like that. I'm sure the P&P they will pay will probably be about 60p. So what they mean is, buy this for £3.81
A bargain is only a bargain if you would have brought it anyway!

Exactly. We got the latest Accucheck unit from Sainsbury's a few weeks ago (on offer, admittedly) for £3.99 and that included strips that were within date. The manufacturers treat them as a loss leader because the strips are then paid for on the NHS.

Have to disagree with ThomasBentley...HBA1C is the definitive test, but it's a report back of your performance over the last few months. The only way to learn how foods interact with your sugar levels hence modify behaviour is by regularly checking using a meter such as this. I'm sure if anyone was going OTT, their GP would simply refuse to prescribe more strips. And in terms of costing the NHS a fortune, well speaking as someone who's grandfather & mother both died of diabetic complications which resulted in prolonged hospital stays, I'd say anything that can be done to head off such eventualities can only be a good thing.
I really must stop loafing and get back to work...
