hmm, looks to good to be true, it says i have subscribe to microsft live- does that cost me?0

Great but its only available in USA!!!!0

THanks OP.
ok sounds like a good deal, only bad points I can think of.
1. Adverts ... they will be similar to the hotmail/live! ads. The reason I moved to gmail.
2. "Some" of the features made available during beta for free, may be taken away after beta. You will have to subscribe to their "basic" package to get these features, which requires payment.
3. What is not mentioned at all in the FAQ is how much it would cost to move your domain away from them when your !!!!!! with 1. and 2. Seeing as they gave it to you for free, I can only guess you will have to buy it off them at a higher than normal fee.
4. Also unclear who owns the domain when you reg it ... them or you. Based on my prediction in 3. - I am guessing them.
But all in all ... a very good move by MS for the personal user. Especially with all the @hotmail.com and @hotmail.co.uks running out.
Alternatives
Buy a domain for cheap at 123reg, £2-3 a year.
You then own it, nobody else.
https://www.jamroll.net for free webmail/hosting.
Not as banner intrusive as hotmail.
You can even get gmail to manage your domain email here at https://www.google.com/hosted
invite by google only, took me 2 weeks0 -
Honestyly. People do tend to Microsoft bash for no good reason. I've found them to be reasonable most of the time. In relation to their development systems I've found MS beter than most vendors, with many items given completely for free. They state clearly about domain ownership on the signup page with :-
If I cancel my Microsoft Office Live subscription, can I keep my domain name?
Your domain name will be registered with Melbourne IT, our domain name registrar, with you as the registrant (owner). If you cancel the Office Live service, you maintain full control of your domain name through the Web site of Melbourne IT (https://www.melbourneit.com.au/). However, you cannot transfer your domain name to another registrar for 60 days after signing up with Office Live. Note that once you cancel your Office Live subscription, you are responsible for paying the annual registration fee for the domain name.
Registrar movement is usually free. Once moved you'll be subject to the nre registrar's fees. Simple and in-expensive.... and that's all I have to say about that.0 -
Sounds really good, except that I'm worried about my name, telephone number, address and email being placed in a "public registry". With my .org.uk, those are held by Internic, but kept private - it's not clear whether that's the case here.
Nice spot though, thanks OP!0 -
