Budget date of 24 March starts countdown for 6 May election

The Treasury will announce the budget will be held on 24 March, making 6 May a racing certainty for the general election.

The timing is likely to mean parliament debating the budget in the week of 29 March. Gordon Brown could then go to Buckingham Palace to call the election on 6 April, after the Easter holiday weekend. MPs and peers would spend a short time in parliament to negotiate remaining bills.

A 6 May election, on the same day as local elections in England, has for some time been regarded as the favoured date. But it runs the risk for Labour of seeing critical first-quarter growth figures published in the final fortnight of the campaign.

Hm... maybe they should just call an election now, and the next government can decide how it spends its money.

If Not Labour win the election, they'll have a new budget I would imagine.

Labour can't afford to have the election on a day other than the date of the local elections as they can't afford to fight 2 campaigns AIUI.
  • What's the point of a budget when a new government will do it's own?
Probably means that Labour will make promises to try to win the election and go back on them if they win. Nowt new there

The Badger will "pledge" everybody's dreams will come true under Labour.

On 7th May, the nightmare of another 5 years of Clown will start.

Will the last wage earner to leave England please turn off the lights.

The trouble is, people will look hard at upper class twit of the year, Osbourne, as I did last night, and think to themselves, 'Can I really vote for him?'

Now it is down to hard choices, and they really are hard. People know what to expect with Laurel & Hardy and many will say, 'Better the devil you know....'

In my constituency, the Lib Dem will win, as usual. :)
