Wrongly pestered by debt collectors on the phone.

These past few days, I have been pestered by a debt collecting firm, looking to track down someone who appears to have used my phone number at some point. I have no debts whatsoever (even on my credit card!). However many times I reiterate this point, they persist with these calls.

How do I get these people off my back?

If it's that bad maybe get in touch with the phone company and ask them to block numbers, this costs money though. Be careful because sometimes they will own random blocks of numbers or also show as withheld so some might slip through.

If it's just one firm (and one account, but this you'll not know) you should be able to send them a letter informing them they are not there and to stop calling you.

I feel your pain! We've been in our flat for 2 years and every few months get a spate of calls looking for the couple that did a runner with out paying rent 5 months before we moved in!
Just wanted to say I spoke to BT about changing our number as we were utterly fed up and they basically said that even if we change it, the debt people will find out the new number soon enough anyway. They said to keep a log of the name of the caller & company and the time that they call. If the same company keeps calling then you can register it through their nuisance call line. To be honest though once you tell them you will be reporting them for harassment/nuisance calls they stop for a while. Also OH tends to tell them where to go (not very politely!) but this is when they have woke him up when he's been on nights!

Oddly enough one call wasn't from a company and when I gave the standard response of "Let me guess your another blumming debt collector looking for Miss X?" The guy got stroppy and said he wasn't and would ring Miss X on her mobile then and hung up. If I'd have had chance I'd have told him to pass on a message to get herself on here and get hers debts sorted out!!!

Thanks. Would reporting them to the Financial Services Authority be worth the trouble?

I think it's the Office of Fair Trading you would want if you want to complain, it might come under the guidelines for debt collection.
