Cleaning Plastic Containers

Options
Like a lot of people I tend to batch cook chilli and stew etc in the the slow cooker and freeze it in portions then defrost / cook in the microwave.

Problem is thanks to my "Dual Key Chilli" the containers have started discolouring and I wondered if anyone new how to clean them as I dont really want to resort to bleach for them

Stuiart.

I've never found bleach works on my plastic containers!icon9.gif

Have now resorted to keeping some just for chilli/curries and others for less staining/aromatic(pongy!!) foods.:D

Same thing happens to mine. I don't think there is anything that you can do about it though (unless you bleach them, which doesn't sound like a healthy option)... It's tomato and red pepper that discolour the food trays. I do find though, that the colour disappears after a couple of washes...

I've given up on buying decent food containers, I stick to ice cream tubs and old takeaway containers. Then it doesn't bother me if they get ruined. Bleach is fine to use though, I regularly bleach my cups when they get tea stained. As long as you wash them well afterwards it's perfectly safe.

A word of warning! never stick chopping boards or anything plastic (especially with the scratches and scrapes that seem to naturally occur on such plastic devices) in the dishwasher with anything tomato based. Everything goes dirty orange :- (

    Snap! :D

I read somewhere that leaving discoloured plastic container out in the sun will remove the colour. I'm just off to try it. Might be more chance of them melting today though.

I just use old take away containers, margerine tubs etc. That way I don't mind chucking them if they get a bit yucky. Having said that, the takeaway tubs seem to clean better and get less stained so maybe you should get someone who eats lots of take aways to save then for you.

 Why are you washing tomato based dishes?

At least I know I am not the only one with the same problem, though my best friends wife did venture the opinon that it was the chilli attacking the plastic and to cut back on the thai birds-eye chilli's next time

Once stained I fill them up with a solution of diluted Milton sterilising fluid and leave them overnight then wash in DW. This always seems to work. In fact its the only reason I buy Milton now as kids are both well at school!
