Plant killer trying to reform.

Options
Hello all,

I have a confession to make. I am the plant equivilent of the Grim Reaper. Plants of any description see me coming, throw up their leaves in despair and die spectacularly quickly. I have killed cacti.

I can't cope with the burden of death any more! We have recently moved to a new house whose previous occupant could have held her head up high on the Gardeners Question Time panel. We moved in during the winter, so the huge mature garden didn't look too bad, but as the summer has progressed I have been increasingly horrified at the way every available space appears to contain a plant of some description. It's out of control!!

I have spent the afternoon losing a wrestling match with a patch of 20 odd thistles which are taller than me. I'm 5 ft 5!

Anyway, the point of this post is that I have decided to take matters into my own hands and ignore the pleas of my OH who insists that it would be much better covered in decking. I want to grow my own produce.

I have been reading the very helpful posts about how to start going about this, and have decided to start with some potatoes and herbs. The garden is very sunny, and apparently very fertile, if the amount of thistles is anything to go by. Any other suggestions about how to avoid killing anything containing chlorophyll and produce to plant at this time of the year would be much appreciated.

I intend to keep this thread as a sort of diary - more to give myself a much needed kick up the backside, but it might be of use to any very novice gardeners out there.

I will be making a trip to Lidl tomorrow for seeds etc. What kind of compost should I get? I really know nothing.

Cheers all - wish me luck!! Sorry for the hugely long post!

Olwen - why not join our Yahoo group to get some spare seeds?

You can read back through the messages and see if anyone's offering seeds you'd be interested in. I'm in the process of creating a table within the group so we can see at a glance what's available.

Multi-purpose compost should do you fine. Most herb seeds will germinate in 2-3 weeks; I sowed some basil and coriander a month ago and they're ready to use.

If it makes you feel better, I once killed an air plant ;) I lost it under the bed and found it a couple of years later.

The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.
