How soon can I re-dye my hair

Help!! I have quite long hair and have been all colours of the rainbow over the years. However, I had my hair dyed at the hairdressers today (well, done by a hairdressing tutor where I work as we have a trainee salon) and I went for a shade of red. Nothing unusual there, but she put a permanent on the roots for 20 min, pulled it through and left it for 5 and then put a different mix on the rest for another 20 minutes.
The roots (approx 1.5 inches) are REALLY ginger - think Geri Halliwell and the rest is just a shade of red. Now, I wouldn't mind one or the other because as an all over colour either would have been fine, but it looks awful, it's as if I have let really ginger natural hair grow through!
How soon can I put a dye on top of permanent hair? I was thinking a mid chestnut just to try to even it out. I've come home and washed it and I don't think it will look much better after I've dried it.
A bit of googling says anything between a day and 6 weeks, any hairdressers who can help? I know it might sound mad but I might need to do this tomorrow!
Hellllllllllllllp - please!!!!!!

Nothing. She had to go off to a group who were having a test and so she didn't see it dry, she did the dye on one half and a learner did the other half of the head. I let the learner have a play with my hair after I'd had it dried and she put a french plait across the front that looked like a headband. That also looked awful in itself but I thought, well they are here to learn, I can take the plait out. I thought the difference in colour would be hidden when my hair was back to its big, curly self, but it isn't.
I've washed and dried it and the roots have faded a tiny bit but there is still a really marked difference.

From DD1
she can put a die on as soon as she wants and to be honest i think shed be best just putting a colour on all over the hair straight away and leaving it all for the same time but cnt be to sure as i cant see it but it should work she just needs to go for a slightly darker colour to tone down the rootsQuality is doing something right when no one is looking - Henry Ford

This is my experience
I wanted to go lighter so a trainee did a bleach bath on it (at her house not even at college!), then put a colour on and it went pink and ginger. It looked bloody awful and was really dry and brittle. We went straight out and bought a nice warm brown and put it straight over the top. It did work but it faded quickly and didn't look great. I had to keep topping it up but that could be because of the bleach that was on it.
Hope you get it sorted out soon - I've had some many hair disasters in the past I know how you feel. :grouphug:A very busy Yummy Mummy to a 1 year old gorgeous boy :smileyhea

beanie - tutor won't be back now until after half term

sammy - I might do that, I was just worried about it either turning to straw or falling out or going an even weirder colour! I'm a base colour 5 and it was a couple of Wella permanent colours. They didn't have the one I wanted in stock and were going to mix a couple. The colour on the roots is lovely, a really rich bright red, but not just for the first inch and a half of my hair!!
