London - Claiming back delayed tube journeys

Hello all,

I thought I would let you know about a seemingly little advertised way of getting your own back when the underground is delayed. According to the customer charter, if your journey is delayed by more than 15mins you are entitled to a refund of a single ticket (in the form of a credit voucher).

Its very easy to claim - especially if you use Oyster like myself - you just need to take a couple of minutes to fill in the form at: https://www.tfl.gov.uk/tube/contacts/refunds.asp

I had heard that you could do this, but always figured I couldn't be bothered, as it was bound to be long and complicated. But, I live in zone 5 on the district line, which means that its quite easy to go over the 15mins and in the last 2 months I have claimed back 10 journeys. I reckon if I carry on at this rate, by the time my annual travel card runs out I will have enough single journey vouchers to last me at least a month - and save over £150!

Technically you seem to be able to claim back to the beginning of 2005 - unfortunately I don't have a good enough memory to remember back very far!

    I recommend this too!

Before my husband started cycling in to London, he used to regularly claim for his delayed journeys to work. It seemed like a refund voucher used to land on the doormat every other day.

He had to claim so often that he got a stack of claim forms and pre-printed them with his name and address to save time.

Then when it was time to renew his season ticket he'd hand over his wad of vouchers and save a fortune. (In the end, though, he got so frustrated with the tube that he gave up on it and started cycling instead. He's never late for work now.)

  • Im glad someone has already listed this - I was about to otherwise!

I live in zone six, but tend to get the train from zone 1 to zone 3. I didn't used to claim, but have started to religiously claim each time I am delayed more than 15 mins - for the 2 mins it takes to complete the form, I hope to be able to claim back a load of money over the year!

lets keep crippling them - and hope for a similar facility on the overground when Oyster is rolled out universally!
  • Of course, not all delays of 15+ minutes can be claimed.

For example if the cause being quoted is "Passenger action" or "person ill on a train", then LT isn't responsible. They do, of course, pay out on "signal failure".

And they do hold back some trains so that the gaps between are reduced to 14 minutes.

I believe the trains formally known as BR require an hour delay before they pay up - and yes that means an hour delay even on a journey that is normally 15 minutes, so add a 45 minute delay to a 15 minute journey you get nothing.
