Hiya,
Has anyone on here made their own cakes, and if so, do you have any tips on where to buy things such as cake stands, boards, decorations etc?
I've had a look on ebay, but was wondering if there was anywhere else I could check.
Thanks in advance.

Hi, I'm considering making my own cake too and have already started practising with making cakes and iced only one so far. I got the icing and hired a cake tin from a celebration cake shop and they have all sorts of equipment to buy. You can buy from all sorts of shops online, try this one:

Thanks for the replies!:D
Didn't think of trying M&S, will check them out!
Ooooh that site looks great gingerbeer! Will have a good look on there!0 -
Recommend HobbyCraft for cake bits!! However to be honest, once I'd priced up all the bits I needed to make my own it worked out not much more to get a local cake maker to make ours. We are have 30 chocolate cups filled with malteser sponge, topped with a malteser! Plus a chocolate covered carrot cake at the top (looks amazing but really hard to describe!!) and its costing £180!:rotfl:Ahahah got my signature removed for claiming MSE thought it was too boring :rotfl:0

Here are a couple sites that do cake equipment:

And for a cake forum where they can help:

Whereabouts are you? There are a couple of cake shops near me that also sell the bits & bobs for making your own, maybe one of your local ones does?0

M&S cakes taste fab but last time i checked im sure they had some sort of pattern on them.
My mum is making my cakes, my MIL is marzipan and icing them and i am decorating them.
Makng the most of everyone's skills.
I have just used my wedding theme as my cake design. I have diamantee heart buckles thread onto some ribbon on the invites and i will also use these for the cake.
Im getting a swarovski crytal monogram cake topper from ebay with mine and DSf's initals on and a few crytals, not to many as they whole topper is a silver colour. and i dont want it to be to blingy.
The key thing to remeber is - know what your limits are. There are loads of cakes i would love to make, but im not that creative. Give me some ribbons and embellishments and i can create anything.
I also made a cake using marshmallows and crystals.
The brides cake wasnt finished in time - horror story and was totally let down.
I stepped in with a bag of pink and white marshmallows (haribo ones) some icing in a tube and some crystals.
We stacked the cakes on top of each other using cake rods to secure them in place. Then we made a waterfall down the top and front of the cake with the marshmallows. putting some crystals in along the way.
It looked fantastic. To hide the botton edges of the cakes as they were really badly made despite going to a top notch cake maker, we put some ribbon around the bottom of each tier.:TIs thankful to those who have shared their :T
:T fortune with those less fortunate :T
:T than themselves - you know who you are!:T0 -
Any leads for cheap cake stands? My mum is making and decorating my cake, but we will need a 2-tier stand for it to go on (I don't want her to have the stress to making it balance with columns!)
Thanks!0 -
have you had a look at Blue Ribbons? They sell a wide range of cake decorations and sugarcraft items. I'm sure that you would be able to pick up cake boards, etc from there at reasonable prices.
I'm a new user so can't post links but just look for blue ribbons in Google.0
