bank charges

Member of my family has now recieved a letter from HSBC rejecting her claim for bank charges refund.
Where do they go from here, the ombudsman?
Her gripe is that her and her OH had massive debts because they were charging charges on charges, getting them deeper and deeper into debt and afftecting the relationship, in the end they had to sell their property and ended up with only about £4k each, they broke up because of it,
She was not aware, at that time, that she could have claimed under the hardship rules, when debts could have been paid off,
how would she if no one told her, could she appeal under these circumstances to the bank or go straight to the ombudsman.
Any advice would be appreciated.

I think the advice is to hang fire. Martin's working on another way of attacking it and template letters etc will be out sometime soon. I read it in one of the articles on here, or maybe in the email.Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.0

They've changed their minds, they're just dropping it all. It's up to individuals to fight on now.

We keep getting conflicting advice.
The letter she has says that if they do not hear back from her in the next 8 weeks they will assume that she is giving up.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
