Hi,
As title really, i have an interview for a job, which when i applied, sounded a level up from mine. Just so i don't go for it (its a fair drive and would have to book holiday) and find its a level lower or something, can i phone HR and ask salary?
I'm probably phoning up for a more detailed job spec anyway...
Tips?

I would guess that if its not listed it will be commensurate with experience or in line with what you are receiving now. Did you have to put your current salary down on your application form?0

I did the same, I just went for the interview and was pleasantly surprised that it was more than I expected (I got the job btw!). Is it the kind of industry where it's likely that they'll only ask you for interview if you have a certain level of experience (as was the case with my job) and it's kinda given that you should be paid a certain amount (maybe to only attract people who know what a job of a certain level will pay and therefore not getting hundreds of applications trying their luck)
Or you could just phone them up and ask and explain that you don't want to waste their time coming if it's not worth it. I'd see it as an opportunity though, they might soon have something better coming up and if you stand out, they might remember you....you never know.0 -
Well it was quite a broad description - its industry specific for knowledge but as its a broad role, not necessarily experience. if you see what i mean? just cos i have an interview doesnt tell me anymore about salary.0

Just call and ask the HR department. I work in Recruitment and get people asking about salaries when they are booked in for interview and we are more than happy to provide this information. No point going for interview if you realistically could not take the job- just tell them what you are looking for and to bear you in mind if they get anything suitable. Many companies, like mine, do not advertise salaries.0

Ask for the salary before you go for the interview if you are in a position where you would turn down a job offer should it be something that you weren't prepared to accept. If you're looking aiming for minimum wage jobs or thereabouts then there is no real need to ask the salary.
I have just left a job that didn't advertise salary, in interview the post was new so had just been given a salary and she didn't know what band / grade it was on, then after I accepted the job it was only on my first day that I found out the salary was dog awful but didn't have anything else, as I stopped looking when I found out I had the job. I wish I hadn't started there, and just worked through an agency for 9 months.
If you phone and ask the salary and they don't want to tell you, you can be sure it's crap.Success and failure is determined by effort.0 -
Its not minimum wage job its just a broad job title, similar to business analyst in the industry and in my company people have similar titles yet salaries could vary up to like 20k +/-. so im going to phone tomorrow.0

Ask for the salary range not the salary.0

Just an update they said the salary was "competitive" and i said at least tell me the band i need to know otherwise i could be wasting mine and the employers time.
They just said the band is too big and wouldn't want to indicate either way.

If they're like that now they'll probably be equally mystical if you actually work there - imagine having no idea of pay or prospects. I'd be inclined to leave this one - perhaps drop them a note declining the interview and explaining the reason. You could mention that the job description does interest you and should their policy change on disclosure of salary bands change you'd like to be informed of any similar posts, though they probably won't be in touch after that.0

Not disclosing salary bands is perfectly normal. I work for a global IT organisation and we would never disclose salary bands. A role with the same title (i.e Project Manager) could vary by 30K depending on experience.
You should know what you are looking for commensurate with your experience, just go in a bit higher than you expect to get and be prepared to negotiate.Life is too short to drink bad wine!0
