Hi,

I have recently been added to the electoral roll - after doing so, a friend has told me that I will now be taxed extra (i..e poll tax). Is this true or is it an urban myth?

Thats an urban myth, unless you have been denying anyone lives at your property and claiming empty property discount or someone at your property has been claiming to be the only adult there and claiming the 25% discount.

The poll tax no longer exists by the way.

I think it is just something your friend has made up... never heard of it before to consider it an urban myth.

Council tax remains the same irrespective if you decide to vote for who the council is and therefore how your tax money is spent or not.

It has in fact been raised a few times on these forums, usually in passing on a thread about something else, although it is a little while since the last one I saw. It seems there are some rather mischievious "friends" out there. Either that or they all know the same person!

i didn't know you could get 25% off council tax for being the only adult living in a house. Is this nationwide or just some areas?

Thats everywhere. It is also the same if there is one chargeable adult and any other adults are students. A house full of students is totally exempt.

I think this electrol roll / tax issue started years ago in the Thatcher era. At the time council tax didn't exist, it was poll tax, and rather than it being charged on the property as council tax is now, it was charged to each person living at the property over 18. One of the many arguements at the time against poll tax was that a millionaire living alone in a mansion would pay less poll tax than a poor family with 10 adults all squeezed together in a council house.

Anyway, the way you were tracked down and had to pay poll tax was by the relevant authorities looking your name up on the electrol roll. Therefore if your name was not on the electrol roll then you couldn't be tracked down and sent a poll tax bill - of course the drawback was you couldn't vote, but I don't think people were too bothered about that.

Anyway, times and taxes have changed, and you will not be taxed any more (or less) by having your name on the electrol roll.

  • My neighbour who is divorced had the bailiffs knocking at her home because her ex-husband who owed money, had given her address as his own. They said they'd found her through the electoral roll so it has a downside being on it. She sorted it out though when she proved she was divorced from said ex. dirtbag.

One upside is your registered at an address for mortgage admin. purposes so that's handy also it's difficult to get a bank account if your not on it.
