Yeah , I had a lot of trouble with several Hotpoints and a Hoover (although they were washer/dryers) , but the Bosch i've got now is a lot more reliable.
Scamps, I am the ultimate washing machine destroyer. Right now I have a Zannusi WM which has lasted me 13 months with no trouble at all. Believe me I cross my fingers every time I push the button. A friend of mine actually had a washing machine for 16 years which never broke down, I believe it was a lavamat or AEG or something which cost about £900, in other words you get what you pay for. As far as I am aware all the machines in each price range are roughly comparable. Because I do an awful lot of washing I am expecting my cheapishWM to only last a short while, so far I have ben lucky. Again it is not the actual name or make of the WM, more the price range you need to look at. Also how many washes per week do you do, you actually have to look at a machine as how many washes as compared to price. Finally the only washing machine I would never consider is one of those Dysons, have had the vacuum cleaners and they are all crap IMO

I have heard that the cheap Hotpoints you buy now are not built to last. We have had a Hotpoint which is about 20 years old and still working. Problem is they now build them cheap and sell them cheap. You can still buy machines which will last but they will cost £100's more.

My parents had a Philips washing machine that finally gave up after 25 years, I can remember my dad repairing it, and on it would go for another few years.

We've got a Bosch - we bought a new 'graded' one off ebay so it worked out a fair bit cheaper than a brand new one. It's got a dent in the side but as it's under the counter, you don't see it - it hasn't ever caused us any problems. We've had it three years now and (touch wood) it's had no problems. My parents had a Bosch too - they have a catering business and do a hell of a lot of washing (5+ loads a day) and their Bosch lasted five years, which is the longest they've ever had a machine last. They replaced it with a cheap Hotpoint recently and it only lasted three months. The repairman said there's a problem with the Hotpoints from the Far East, apparently the European ones were much more reliable but they don't make them there anymore.
If money was no object then like Sheel I'd go for a Miele. We've got a Miele vacuum and it's fantastic. However, they are stupidly expensive so for a reasonably priced machine I'd definitely go for Bosch.

I usually have Hoover washing machines which have served me well, Apparently it's the same company as Candy now so they don't have the reputation that they used to

I know people who had Bosch washers and when a part fails, it takes forever to get the replacement. Even when one of the friends's husband works for Bosch!!!!
You cannot live for a long time without a washer if you used to have one - unless you have some kind relatives around the corner. My friend had a broken washing machine. Took her loads to her parents and their washer broke.

I don't do much washing. I have no family. I want one with a 95c wash, half load setting and a good fast spin.
The one that has gone up the swanee is a Hotpoint and I've had that for eight years.
My Bosch has lasted me 11.5 years so far, and I've never had a problem with it. There's only me, so that's a couple of loads a week.
You should be able to get a good fast spin and half-load setting on any machine. Why would you want to wash at 95c, btw? 60c is enough to kill house dust mites.

I will agree with a couple of other posters, hotpoint are not the best. In fact a hot point washer drier was my worst ever machine-1st repair at 8 months. Total writeoff at 12 months and 1 day ie 1 day out of guarantee.
OP I get the impression you are just washing for yourself? In which case I would recomend a simple Indesit model, my Mum loved hers after we had all left home, have also heard good reports from other people.
