Most meals out of one item?

Hey all,

I bought a large piece of turkey breast at my local market a few days back, cost me £1.49. I've already had 2 portions of homemade turkey dippers, 4 adult sized portions of turkey curry (admittedly with onion and mushrooms in there too) and have enough left over for an adult sized portion of something else - I was thinking escolope, or 3 adult sized burgers if I added lentils/veggies etc.

That makes a total of 9 dinners out of one turkey breast. Cost per portion?

16p. :T

Has anyone else been surprised at how much they've got out of one joint without too many 'fillers' added?

On a side bar - I doubt I would have got anything as cheap at Tescos/Sainsburys, but they are planning on knocking down our market at some point in the near future, and selling the land to a big chain supermarket. I have a shop built into the market and none of us are best pleased, as you can imagine. The council announced this plan 2 weeks after they made a big hoo-har about the market trading for 100 years...........
This year I'm getting organised once and for all, and going to buy a house with my wonderful other half. And that' s final!

Current Pay Off Target : £1500

I always find a gammon joint very good value, especially if you can get one reduced (just after New Year is a good time to look for them ;) )We have it roasted, then it goes in sandwiches, pies, pasta bakes, on top of pizzas, gets eaten cold, pea & ham soup, - anything you do with ham basically. Lovely, and always popular.

I get most dishes out of a gammon joint too, roast, quiche, pasta dishes, cold in sandwiches or with chips etc,in omelettes, pea and ham soup, cheese and ham toasties with last bits. Never waste anything from a gammon joint at all.

  • I just got a multitude of meals out of one ginormous butternut pumpkin! I halved it and then roasted the half stuffed with a filling of mince, onion, garlic, peas, sweetcorn served with rice (that served my greedy OH and me plus a guest). Then I used a leftover quarter as a steamed veg with some steak and baked tatties; and at the moment I have the remainding bits cut into chunks in the slowcooker with some chicken, stock, beans, white wine, onion and mushrooms for dinner with creamy pasta tonight. And the thing only cost 99cent (about 40p).

I bought a lb of mince from Asda on Tuesday for £1, made chilli with lots of beans and onion with 1/2 served 6 people and the other 1/2 made 10 meatball (with lots of breadcrumbs mixed in) which should serve the 4 of us with pasta and garlic bread. Pretty cheap, although it's far too hot for chilli today !
  • Bought an extra large chicken last week on special for £2.99.

Made a fantastic chicken roast on Sunday night with huge portions.

Made a chicken stock from the bones and made a simple spicy chicken soup with vegetables which lasted two of us three days for dinners.

With the loads of meat left over I made a simple chicken salad which was used in sandwiches which the two of us had in packed lunches for three days.

It's not as Money Saving as everyone elses, however we're trying and I love the fact that we're not wasting anything!

    Kind regards,

Pork shoulder. I buy it with 2 beef silverside joints as our market is closing on Saturdays for £12, so each joint averages £4. The pork is big enough to feed 4-5 for Sunday dinner, have in a sandwich each later that day and the remainders become sweet and sour the following day.

Well spotted and oops on my part:o. I thought the price of a turkey breast even from the market was incredibly cheap - no wonder!
