Soapflakes as a dog shampoo

I read on the website for soapflakes that some people use it as a shampoo to wash their dogs and horses .
Well the other week i tried it on my dog, just made up a solution in an empty bottle - not strong and the results were good.
His coat is lovely and silky, suffered no reactions due to the fact that soap flakes are just pure soap.
Makes me wonder if they were used years ago before all these fancy products came on the market.
