Name change

Options
Just wondered if anyone can give me the answer to this. I want to change my name back to my maiden name. Usually you can just start using your new name as long as no fraud is intended. But the complication is that I have had 2 name changes, one by deed poll. Does this make any difference or would I have to relinquish the deed poll officially so to speak? First changed my name when married, then divorced but kept married name. Then new partner so changed name to his by deed poll 8 years ago so this is the name all my information (financial etc) is under. What would happen if I just sent a copy of my birth certificate to everybody and informed them that this is my name from now on? Would they insist on a legal change via a solicitor? :-/

As far as I know you can call yourself anything you like. You have to inform everybody in writing that you are changing your name I believe and I assume in the case of Banks etc you would have to have proof of who you are now aswell .

If you want an official looking bit of paper to confirm the change back, (date etc), you could always do it by Statutory Declaration....type it up yourself and get a solicitor to witness it...only charge a couple of pounds usually.

There was a thread on the boards about it, with a couple of example S.D's, a while ago but I can't find it...maybe someone else can ??? ??? ???
    Nice to save.

Thanks for your responses. I'll try the birth certificate and letter route to all and see if any organisation wants anything different.

  • Name changes (and address changes) can be a real pain - and work out expensive!

Make a list of EVERYONE who has your details and it will run into pages. Of those, many will need new signatures as well - and of those, some may require witnesses to the new signatures!

Some organisations now charge 'admin' fees - including companies where you have warranties on products. I found this out as having moved house recently - I received the warranties for the windows from my solicitors. I phoned the companies to have the name changed on them - and they wanted £35 and £50 respectively! As the warranties don't have much time left on them I've decided not to bother.

DVLA will want new photos if you don't have a photo licence.

The only official agency that did not want to be told about my address change was the Passport Agency. But they may require to be told about your name change.
