Tax Query?

My son is 17. He worked part time temp.seasonal over Christmas and paid tax.
He started working for the same company p/t February, later going full time and paying tax.
He will soon be going back to full time education.
He has not yet grasped the idea of holding on to payslips etc. and does not know if he got a P45 in April.
Q. Does he automatically get the tax he has paid back or will he need to claim for it?
Q. If he has been given the tax back in his pay(for the last tax year 2008-2009) , will the tax he paid last year now be '0' ?
My reason for asking is two fold.
He paid tax on some savings and has the application to claim it back. Naturally it asks how much tax he paid 2008-2009. If he has been given it back it will be nothing which would be great as we would not have to try and retrieve any P45s.
If his working tax is not paid back to him automatically we will need to look into claiming it back for last year and keep it in mind for next April.
Any help would be appreciated!

This would all depend on whether he was setup on the correct tax code or not and if he was when this happend and if the employer operated it on time.
Without going into a drawn out conversation about this it would be far easier if he calls the tax office and speaks to us. We are always there to help and offer advice. His local tax office would be able to tell him how much he made and what tax he paid on this.0
