Tip For HMV Addicts

Options
Not sure where to put this (I seem to start every thread with that)

I had a stroke of genius today. It was my birthday yesterday and someone gave me one of those really annoying "new" style HMV vouchers which looks like a credit card. These things usualy annoy me as you can't tell how much is on them and you always end up with more than one. BUT after reading the small print I discovered that HMV have finally come up with a good use for them as you can add money to it, so...

*TO CUT A LONG STORY SHORT, START READING HERE*
If you have trouble curtailing your HMV spending habit, next time yo get an HMV voucher card simply keep the card and add, say, £10 a month to it: and only ever spend in HMV using your card. It's like a credit card in revearse and a much better deal for you! It makes it easier to budget this way, if there is something a bit pricey that you really want, you'll simply just have to not buy anything in HMV for a few months until you've saved up.

Well, what d'ya think? (This is where you tell me it's been done)

Joe

That's a good idea, DH is awful for his HMV habit. I have been trying to dissuade him using the lack of storage thing but it doesn't seem to be working :(

I think this is what some of the stores intend people do with them, but you're really tying yourself into HMV rather than shopping around, and there's rarely anything in HMV that I can't find cheaper elsewhere or online in my Money Saving searches! It's sort of like buying yourself gift vouchers...I've never heard of people doing that, really.

I hope it works well for you, but personally I can't see any advantage...you're tying your money up on a bit of HMV plastic when it could be earning interest somewhere for you until such time as you choose spend it (anywhere you like!).

  • Thanks guys, and happy birthday Black-Saturn.

Loadsabob, that's a good point. Now that I think of it I'm a reformed HMV addict - it's pretty much what brought me here in the first place! (I'm a film student, I must have DVDs!!). Unfortunately people still buy me HMV vouchers when I'd be much happier with a £10 'Bank of England Voucher' - not that I mean to sound ungrateful but don't you hate the way people say "well I'd rather give you a voucher than cash" and "dont put it in the bank, that's to buy something nice for your birthday" as if I'm a child who can be trusted! Besides, paying of an overdraft IS a nice present for my birthday!

Anyway, my point is that it took me a long time to stop going in there. These days I am happy to get decent quality second hand DVDs from Xiddi.com or a good one is CEX.co.uk (ooh err, sounds a bit rude) - they have a good website where you can find your local store (there's one in Croydon) and check it's stock - I got the Twin Peaks box set for £12.99, HMV price on the same day £89.99!!! And it was in pristine condition, you could give it to someone as a present and they would have no idea it's second hand! (of course I didn't!)

But I know what it's like, I think HMV is the (mostly) male version of a shoe sale! Especially when they have their summer sale on - so I thought maybe it's a good way to ween yourself off them.

Hi Joe - that made me smile!

Yes, perhaps a good weening tool, but putting temptation in the way if you're already reformed!!

I was so abrupt that I forgot to wish you a belated happy birthday!

I started a thread, moaning about those "cards" recently! ;) :

    You could also join https://www.pigsback.com

The points add up pretty quickly, even if all you do is click the 10 point links on the homepage. Get vouchers for CD-WOW with your points. :) I think there's a thread about pigsback somewhere on MSE, if you want to search for it . . .
