Home cures for tonsillitis.

I've got a really bad case of tonsillitis at the moment, along with the a nasty ear infection (I don't believe in doing things by halves lol) I went to the doc yesterday and he's given me a 10 day course of Erythromycin. It's worked pretty well already to get rid of the pains in my joints and ear but my throat is still unbearably sore, I can't even swallow my own spit (sorry if that's tmi!) I'm also taking ibuprofen and paracetamol but that isn't touching the pain. When I was at the chemist picking my prescription up yesterday I saw a spray that is supposed to numb your throat but it was £7 a bottle  and I just don't have that kind of money to spare at the moment (I've had a lot of bills this past couple of weeks)

Does anyone have any effective home remedies for helping take away the pain?

You are not allowed to ask for and we are not allowed to give medical advice on the forums.

From a money saving view though, why not ask your GP for a bottle of the throat spray on prescription.

I wouldn't have thought that asking for a home cure was medical advice

Edited to say, the docs is closed until Tuesday now and I won't be able to get an appointment at the out of hours surgery at the hospital as I have already been prescribed antibiotics. Which is why I was wondering if there were any things you can use that I am likely to already have round the home to help ease the discomfort.

It is though.Even home cures/remedies are advice relating to a health problem. We are not even allowed to suggest the traditional relief for chicken pox spots.

I could suggest several things which might help but you could be allergic to any of the ingredients for all I or anyone else here knows. You might be on medication which conflicts with a home remedy. You could be diabetic and the sweet options dangerous for you.

This is why these questions are not allowed as well as the fact that this is a money saving board, not medical forum and we are only allowed to discuss money saving health issues.

You could ask whether home cures might be cheaper than prescribed drugs but again, anyone suggesting home cures is breaching the rules and potentially putting you at risk.

From my own experience, home cures are not that brilliant for tonsollitis as they tend to be a quick fix but not long lasting and you could in fact end up throwing more money at the ingredients you need than sticking to just your medication. It sounds like you need to discuss your pain relief with your GP again and your pharmacist will assist you in working out whether the cost of anything prescribed can be brought cheaper over the counter.

Well my initial post did comment on the fact that one treatment I had seen was far to expensive and I was looking for cheaper alternatives ;)

I'll ask for the thread to be pulled though if its against the rules.

What the heck happened to common sense? As an adult if someone suggests something and I know I am allergic to an item, or I am diabetic I should be sensible enough to take that into consideration in any suggestion I (or anyone else reading) am given, surely.

I have sent you a PM.

Unfortunately, you do not always know you are allergic to an ingredient. Imagine if I suggested you boil a particular plant and sip it during the day to ease your throat but it turned out you were allergic to it and ended up in hospital because of my advice. Who would you blame? Or maybe you wouldn't, you would just see it as a lesson learned.

Unfortunately, not everyone who comes onto forums has sufficient common sense or are feeling so grotty they might try anything. You can't have a rule that says "if you are too daft to think carefully about the advice given, you must not ask for it" so unfortunately there has to be a rule for everyone to prevent things going wrong.

We are not even allowed to simply give our experiences of what works for us and what doesnt which I would argue technically does not constitute advice and if it could be money saving then it could meet the criteria of a money saving forum. Unfortunately, what is safe for one to try might not be for another and as it is the owners of the site who take the consequences and hassle if someone takes umbrage at suffering ill effects from a recommendation here then the owners quite rightly want to cover their backs.

Sorry, I'm afraid we are not allowed to give medical advice as per the sticky at the top of the forum. I appriciate that everyone wants to help, but for legal reason, I have to shut the thread and recommend that you ask your doctor.
