Make your washing machine last longer & cheaper

Hi,

A quick tip. My brother is a heating engineer and he says that a common problem with washing machines breaking down is that people use too much washing powder, which ends up corroding and clogging parts.

We buy the tablets and we have always used one tablet instead of two (two is recommended by Persil, Arial).

We never have a problem with clothes not being clean enough after a wash and I would say that after we have had our washing machine for 7 years we have probably saved enough to buy a new machine if this one broke down (which it hasn't).

To be honest our clothes are never really grimy to begin with though but we live in a hard water area - not sure if that makes a difference.

Wecome to MSE Old Style bonsoirbonsoir :hello:

I'm going back to making my own hm laundry powder - cheaper powders are the worst for clogging up the machine (as I have recently experienced!)

Also, using the bicarb/vinegar solution instead of commercial fabric conditioner not only does the clothes and your pocket good, but helps prevent the machine waste pipes clogging up too :D

I only use Aerial liquid so I presume this is okay. I sometimes wonder though if I use too much fabric softener (Surcare). Shall cut it down by half as that drawer I am often have to wash out.

I picked up a great tip from this site- If you are using washing powder use 2 scoops (from my vanish tub) of your normal powder and add one scoop of soda crystals. It works out at half a cup or so. Washing is just as clean as normal and alot cheaper too.

  • Just done a quick calculation:

Tablets cost about 20p for 2 (Ariel current price). So assuming 5 washes a week, for 7 years, by using 1 tablet instead of two this has saved £182 - roughly what we paid for the washing machine 7 years ago. :D
