How can I make a Moulin Rouge Outfit Cheaply?!

Hi to all

I need some help - my friend at work is having a hen night at the end of August (so Ive plenty time to prepare) but the theme is Burlesque.

I cant afford to spend a fortune on a costume, so can any of you suggest places I can pick up bits and pieces cheaply to make my own??

I am not the most crafty person either, so any advice on the best way to make my own is also appreciated.

I do have a basque-type top which I have never had the courage to wear, which is red on one side and black on the other and can be worn either way. I was thinking of wearing it the black side round and getting some red lace or sequins to put onto it, but how exactly I do this, I dont know!! :rotfl:

Other than that, I dont know. I imagine I could pick up a cheap pair of black hot pants in primark!!! Good god - hot pants at my age.......surely not!

Please help......

xx

Yeah you wanna pick up some hotpants (or black shorts) from Primark, two pairs of fishnet tights (or one opaue, one fishnet), and cut the legs off the fishnet pair, poke your finger through the end where the feet would go and wear them as gloves. Apart from that you just need some heels, maybe a mask - I saw some good ones in Accessorize not too long ago, and perhaps a bit of lace or a flower corsage to wear. Lots of strong makeup, red lips.. and you're sorted!

Not forgetting high heels of course! :-)

    Poundland often sell feather boas.

Try charity shops as well, for costume jewellery and clothing.

If you're not feeling quite brave enough for hot pants, look in second hand shops/primark for big flouncy summer skirts. Another alternative, though more burlesque, less moulin rouge is a tight fitting pencil skirt. Again primark/second hand shops should be able to get them. Bring the basque with you to try them on together.

    Then it's just accessories, accessories, accessories . . .
Primark/H&M are wonderful for them, as well as cheap dramatic make up (especially eyeliners and nail varnish). Fake eyelashes look wonderful.

Look at jewellery and hair accessories creatively. Last time I went, I had a black pendant plasticy chain from primark. I painted it over with purple nail varnish to match the ribbon in my corset. You could use a piece of ribbon with an old bra hook sewn on the back as a choker. If you have an old pendant lying around you could sew it to hang from it.

A single large feather from a normal sewing shop shouldn't set you back too much and can look very dramatic whether you hold it in your hand or fix it in your hair. A strip of lace/ribbon can be sewn onto skirts. A little bit of netting fixed to a small hat can add mystique . . .

Your local sewing accessories place is your friend, though you may need to hunt one out, some of them are much better value then others.
