Free no-frills e-mail account!

Options
Having not-so-recently joined the broadband revolution, I've spent several months looking for a simple POP3-capable e-mail account to replace my old one.
There were several that looked promising, but most either were restricted in some way (no POP at all), or used advertising to cover running costs (such as HotPOP - sorry, HonestJohn  .

It was only after I kinda gave up looking that I found this. HTTP, POP3 and IMAP access; there's also spam- and virus-filtering to boot!

Been using it for several weeks now, with no problems. Well, other than being unable to access my account for one day when they switched* mail servers... :)

It's run by a company called Portland Communications.

*mail.postaccess.com, formerly mail.postaccesslite.com - hopefully they'll give the correct address when signing up for new accounts.

Update 19/2/2005
Postaccesslite accounts now require telephone activation, a measure perportedly brought into effect because of account abuse (whatever that is).

  • I had a look but you are just as well using hotmail, at least you get options with hotmail, but still it is an option for those who wish another e-mail account.1a_y_wink.gif
  • Indeed; but then again, Hotmail doesn't allow POP access for free anymore. This is for people who prefer to use a client program such as Outlook Express for mail handling.

I've been using hotpop now for about 3 months with no problems. I think there is a daily limit of 500 emails to stop spammers.

I haven't been plagued by advertising. I gave the questionaire a miss when signing up though so maybe they can't target any ads at me. An interesting site for people looking for an email provider is emailaddress.

  • That's where I found HotPOP... never occurred to me not to fill in the questionnaire though. :) Good tip!

I have used hotpop for a few years now. It is only recently, when I have been involved in some voluntary committees that I have found that they are not at all reliable. Several emails go missing a week. I am looking for a reliable service - and I am happy to pay for that!
