Cradle cap

Options
my DD is 13 months old and still has bad cradle cap. I only use that shampoo which is designed to shift it, and I am fed up with paying over the odds for it, I have tried baby oil on her head but that hasn't worked either.

Any suggestion please. It's such a shame as it looks awful

I just used baby oil and persisted. It took along while to loosen but it did work.

Not sure if I am doing it wrong then,

I put the oil on once she was out of the bath and rubbed it in and left it on till she had a bath the next day, washed her hair and cont with cycle etc . Is that what you did?

dont know about rikki but when my kids were little and had cradle cap i also used baby oil but just left it on for approx 45mins -hour then brushed the hair with a soft baby brush as rikki says you just have to persevere

I did the same as barjam. put the baby oil on an massaged it in. Left it to soak and soften the craddle cap and brushed it out gently. It loosens the edges and don't be tempted to pick as it can make her head sore.

  • You are best to use a natural vegetable oil such as olive oil or grapeseed oil. These get absorbed into the skin rather that sitting on the skin, and work better to moisturise and seperate the cradle cap.

Grapeseed oil is used in baby massage and is a lot less greasy than other oils, and is safe to use. Can be found in the vegetable oil section of the supermarket. This will also cost a lot less than c-cap shampoo and baby oil and as it is natural doesn't have any of the added chemicals.

It is also useful to get a fine toothed comb and to comb the hair which helps to remove the cradle-cap from the hair (if baby has any - mine had a mop of hair from birth which I still can't bear to cut)

If its really bad, you can apply the oil and leave in overnight (using a cotton hat helps) and this works quite quickly. Does however leave a gross greasy mark on the fitted sheet!

Hope this helps, it worked with my baby.

I also used grapeseed oil on dd cradle cap, I normally left it on overnight and then combed it out the next day, would really recommend it wish I'd thought to use a cotton hat though I just use to wrap a extra sheet at the head end of the cot.

I also use grapeseed oil and brush his hair with a soft bristle brush somewhere between 1 to 24 hours later

I tried everything with my DS, until one of my mums friends suggested peanut butter. Yes, you read it correctly!! I guess it works in the same way as olive oil etc as it very greasy, but we left it in overnight and washed it out the next morning and it had cleared up in a few days. Don't make the same mistake we did and use crunchy, you'll be finding the bits for weeks!!

This obviously won't be suitable if there is any history of peanut allergy in your family.

Is your baby your 1st? I got sooo stressed when DS had it that I was prepared to try these wacky ideas, but just let DDs 1 and 2 grow out of it, which they do eventually.

    GOOD LUCK

Thank you so much I am off to ASDA 1 st thing tomorrow and will give it a try tomorrow. :j

    will keep you posted. :T
  • OS is olive oil. It's also the very best thing for bunged up ears, particularly if they need to be syringed. Please be careful with peanut butter - you won't know if your baby is allergic to it or not until you try it, unless she's already eating it.
