I recieved a letter from Mackenzie Hall a few months back asking for £3k for a credit card debt which they claime I owe and it was taken out from Halifax no dates etc any way I wrote to them telling them I haven't had a credit card let a haliax one and that I am not paying for something that is not mine and heard no more until I recieved phone from Mackenzie Hall last week wanting my previous addresses and dates, they said its for a debt from 1998, they claim I owe £3k on a Halifax Credit card, again told the man on the phone I have never had a credit card let alone an Halifax one. and he then said I lived at address when I didn't and wanted me to tell him all my adresses from 1998 until now which I said NO to but ever now and then he said can you make a payment of £10 or £5 at this time. NO NO and he became quite rude and wouldnt listern to me and then I realized that I didn't put my number on the letter and asked my partner if we listed and we not so
ask how they got my telephone number has I am not listed he wouldnt answer and kept saying it didn't matter how and that he was doing his job.
I must point out that this debt was with another debt recovery company before these and I told the other company never had the credit card etc that was nearly 2 years ago and heard no more until now .
What do I do now if they continue to ring me and try and pressure me I have read other blogs on these people and don't make nice reading and some quite scary with the tatics they have used towards some people.

Dear Sir/Madam
Ref: xxxxxxxxxxx
You have contacted us regarding the account with the above reference number, which you claim is owed by ourselves.
We would point out that we have no knowledge of any such debt being owed to The Loan Company.
We are familiar with the ‘Office of Fair Trading Debt Collection Guidance’ which states that it is unfair to send demands for payment to an individual when it is uncertain that they are the debtor in question.
We would also point out that the OFT say under the Guidance that it is unfair to pursue third parties for payment when they are not liable. In not ceasing collection activity whilst investigating a reasonably queried or disputed debt you are using deceptive/and or unfair methods.
Furthermore, ignoring and/or disregarding claims that debts have been settled or are disputed and continuing to make unjustified demands for payment amounts to physical/psychological harassment.
We would ask that no further contact be made concerning the above accounts unless you can provide evidence as to our liability for the debt in question.
We also notice the OFT have recently placed requirements on Mackenzie Hall Ltd. Specifically, that they/you and all connected companies cease collection activity and enforcement while any debt remains queried or disputed. Should you ignore this requirement, a complaint with the OFT and other regulatory bodies will be raised.
We await your written confirmation that this matter is now closed. Otherwise we will have no option but to make a complaint to the trading standards department and consider informing the OFT of your actions.
We look forward to your reply.
Yours faithfully

Yeah. I think the more complaints OFT receive, the better. Also, MPs can be helpful as well. All this got to stop0

Well, look at it this way - if no one complains about the abysmal treatment, then nothing will ever change. It is within everyone's power, not just your own situation, to complain as it can improve things for the next person. We have already seen a few deaths from the hounding people have got from being in debt. When you see things like that occuring, you do have to question things very deeply. Last year, re Halifax. A man was persistently hounded whilst suffering with cancer. It was reported in the papers/brief footnote on the news; as is always mostly the case with deaths caused by harassment when in debt. Well, it had already been to court to stop Halifax from harassing this man for money he didn't have. Now, in an ideal world, you'd imagine things like that would take care of such things. Not so. It was reported they continued to do it even after all that was done. I could go on about the other people who were hounded to death; one regularly gets a mention here because of the tragedy behind it. Someone getting hounded for a debt wasn't even there's. TBH, I think when things like this are happening, it is time to draw a line. As human lives become commodoties, and the person behind the debt is ignored by the vultures who hound them, knowing the whole time they cannot pay not WILL not pay. Still, takes all sorts I imagine to even have the gaul to hound people like that; a particular 'breed' of person shall we say. The more reports, the more complaints, the more it gets taken notice of. Okay, it will take time, but unless it starts then it will never get heard, never change anything.
And this, above, is one of the main reasons it's important to report these things. It's not just you, for example, but for everyone who is in debt. If no one reports things, nothing will change. Quite simple, really.
So, I am with Fermi - complain!
It is within everyone's power to change things about the way things are. Use them.
If you wish to see the true horror behind creditor harassment read here:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2008/dec/06/halifax-debt-chase-man-cancer
If you do not, then don't read it. Simple. However, this is what is happening to people in debt daily. And this is what is at stake. Protecting others from the same treatment.Any help, opinions, views I may hold those are my own. Respect them as you would expect the same in return. Offered freely, is gleaned from a lifetime of experiences, knowledge gaining. Passed on to benefit others. I may be direct, ask you questions but those are to help you. Up to you if you choose to take it. I won't judge you either way.

Hi Merlinexcalibur thanks for your reply and you are so right you know, I have seen it in the papers many times but until it happens to you, you don't realize the true extent of it and it's a wake up call, in the last few months I have been looking into all the debt collection issues and what others have had to go through and it's been a true eye opener and I am some what ashamed to say that this didn't really bother me until it happen to me. But like you I would like to put a stop to this behaviour and honding of people for debts when they are not theres and also for better ways of obtaining money from people who do have debts because like you say deaths have happend because of it.
When I wrote this Thread I didn't know how to word it all has the way I have been treated is so unfair and like some it's not even my debt and then the replys from all you guys have made me feel better about it but in the same time mad as I am begining to find out that more and more people are having the same problems and mine is not just a computer error is 1 of many debt collector chancers to make a few more peoples lives a misery.
