There is no general rule of thumb on these any more. Used to be easier in the past but it now depends on a number of things like commutation factor, personal circumstances, current and future needs, health considerations, investment risk profile, what you would actually do with the lump sum and personal opinion and more.

I wouldnt want to give a generalisation on a once in a lifetime decision that is cast in stone and cannot be undone once completed without knowing any facts.

    Hi Dave,

Dunstonh's comments are right as usual, but there's a few things here that might make you think about it a little more:

    - 10 reasons why you may not want to take that cash lump sum from your pension

With so many different types of pension scheme, and the various options available, seeking advice from an IFA has to be worthwhile for most people.

I work in the field of Pension Education and Pension Guidance in the UK. I am a member of the Specialist Pensions Forum as well as being a Voluntary Adviser for The Pensions Advisory Service. I work with scheme members, employers, trustees, scheme administrators and advisers on most things to do with employer sponsored pension schemes. The views expressed by me in this thread are my personal opinions. You should seek professional advice from an appropriately experienced and qualified adviser. I am not an IFA.
