What happens if you ignore letters that are not addressed to you?

i keep getting letters not addressed to me but to previous tenant and another name. i accidently opened on and saw it was a debt collector. my partner says ignore it and return to sender. but i am scared they are going to try and pin the debt on me if i contact them.

If you get letter addressed to a previous tenent the best thing to do is pop them back in the post marked "not known at this address, return to sender" as you have opened one in error you could call the company and tell them but if reading the post on this board are anything to go by they won't stop sending them.

Remember it's up to the DCA to prove you are the person owing the debt, it's not up to you to prove you are not that person.

You have nothing to worry about IMO

We've been having a similar problem. I now email / telephone the sender and return the letters, with note explaining previous occupiers moved away 7 years ago, as when I ignored the problem, letters kept coming, however now I'm contacting the senders, we dont receive so many.

I have a better, more productive use for such letters. I burn them on the fire, not my problem. Gone. And it provides heat for a short time, too. ;)

Okay, you should never do this. It's not your debt, so don't waste your time contacting them. It is the responsibility of the creditor/DCA to trace someone; I even ended up telling one of them once over the phone (a long time ago before I learned shall we say) to check the parish records. I found the person they were seeking quite easily so, really, couldn't understand why they couldn't. Just one of those things. I don't even bother returning to sender anymore, as this also wastes my time and energy having to clean up someone elses problem. So, I really wouldn't waste yours on it. Apart from that you could potentially get into hot water because of Data Protection and opening mail. Best way, get rid.
Any help, opinions, views I may hold those are my own. Respect them as you would expect the same in return. Offered freely, is gleaned from a lifetime of experiences, knowledge gaining. Passed on to benefit others. I may be direct, ask you questions but those are to help you. Up to you if you choose to take it. I won't judge you either way.
