Losing Weight OS!!

Options
I have been doing OS for a few weeks now and have found that I have piled weight on because I am eating alot of traditional "comfort" foods like pasta, rice and milk puddings - I know you don't have to eat these foods on OS but I love making receipes and have just gravitated towards them. Trouble is, I was fat enough anyway and now I am heading towards huge at a rate of knots!!. I don't want diet advice as I know how to lose weight, but I was thinking of joining Slimming World, and wondered if any other OS'ers out there did this programme and if they managed to fit it in with their budgets etc. I went to Slimming World and lost weight years ago but I remember you ate LOADS of red meat, but I think it is different now (or it seems to be from the website). Does anyone do it and would they recommend it for OS living??

I've cut down on the portion sizes of things like pasta, rice and potatoes and am bulking out all the meals with veggies. In addition, we don't have any of those yummy puddings unfortunately. However, we do eat plenty of fruit. Our supermarket bills have fallen and we're eating better than we used to.

Forgot to say that we now eat lots of bulky veggie soups which are really filling and very healthy!

Eating OS shouldn't increase your weight per se. By cooking your food rather than eating processed food you are in far more control of what goes into your food and how much you serve, many find they lose weight!!

VickyA is quite right, bulking food out with veggies is far more OS than ladening a plate with extra pasta/potatoes/rice.

I know there was a weightloss thread but I can't find it right now - you could try the search in the meantime.

    Edited to add link:

Found it :j Click on the link. HTH :)

I have piled on weight due to getting meals with new job and am facing the same challenge.

I find the following os, cheap and not to fattening:
Porridge for breakfast (oats also supposed to be one of the super foods), stewed fruit with very low fat yoghurt or fromage frais, loads of soups.. stews

I do agree wityh vicky A...try to cut down on you pasta intake and eat more vegetables and fruits to fill you up...have a little chocolate once in a while but don't try to eat the whole bar. I do tend to have little treats of choclate( a small wedge) or chocolate once in a while just to satisfy my craving. Most of all...try to do some exercise. Walk for about 15 mins or half an hour at least 3 times a week, it does make a difference. I have recently joined tesco diets, although I find that some of the recipes requires expensive stuff, I still put my MSE hat on and try to find ways and means to get the ingredients as cheap as possible or substitute some ingredients. So far I have lost 1.9kgs.in two weeks and I am getting there slowly and I do hope you do too...because the end of it all is that you will feel good and have more self confidence.

I found that the GI diet worked well with OS cooking/budgeting. Basically you cut down on the processed carbs - switch to things like wholemeal flour, oats, wholemeal pasta etc. Lots & lots of fruit & veg and small portions of meat/fish. The emphasis is on HM foods rather than processed junk.

Also have a look at the GL diet. Supposedly a "more refined" version of GI. OH and I are mixing and matching recipes from both. Oh, and with a pinch of Rosemary Conley and WI cookbooks - and some from the OS thread! Many different resources. Basically, we're just eating more healthily.

  • Pop into your GP practice and ask the practice nurse for a weight loss diet sheet - totally moneysaving.
  • I suppose the most OS way to lose weight has got to be 'eating less'.This is something I have real trouble with.I've just had 2 portions of my excellent ;) chicken tikka and pudding, now I feel absolutely stuffed and I didn't enjoy the second portion as much as the first. How stupid is that? :o I could have put the leftovers in the freezer for another meal.

I'm sure if I stopped having seconds and snacks, however OS and hm they might be, I'd lose my excess weight.Oh,and if I walked more - that's free too.
