Something bad going on (Bailiffs?)

If you've read my other posts you may know I have debt to the halifax and haven't contacted them yet after months of not paying bills.

My they have phoned my mobile and I've ignored it. This has been going for a while now.

My dad texted my mobile twice yesterday to tell me that the Halifax have phoned my parent's house (???!!!!!) looking for me. He told them I don't live there.

He's just texted me again to say that today they have phoned my parent's next door neighbour. Is this legal???

I'm really worried now? This sounds like bailif behaviour. Any clues?

I'm at work but I'm gonna have to duck out at lunch to ring them. Christ knows what excuse I can give my dad for this....

Today was gonna be a good day too with the fact I've been sorting everything but this one remaining "bad" debt out. It's only for a sum of £1000 at the most, which I *do* intend to start paying off in small installments as of next month. I'm really scared what's going on now. Why are they ringing my parent's and why on earth are the ringing my parent's next door neighbour!!!???

Great that your now sorting out these debts,it must be such a worry.I am sorry if I am stating the obvious but if you had answered your mobile calls you wouldnt have had this extra worry.I dont know if its legal, sounds dubiously illegal, but what was said and can you prove it?Its easy to quote data protection, but more facts needed. If it is bailiffs, most of them belong to one of two governing bodies and you could complain,if others on this site say actions were illegal.Good luck, youare getting there.!

OK I just phoned the Halifax. Actually wasn't so bad.

I was over £400 in arrears on a card with a £500 limit. They accepted a £38 payment on the phone since they said it was going to another agency if I didn't pay at least that at the time. They also accept an agreement of £50 per month by direct debit to pay off the remainder.

When asked if they have phoned my Parents' and my parents' neighbour they said the only numbers they would ring are the ones they have on file. He read them to me. One was my mobile and one was my parents'... he insured me that they would not have phoned anyone else. I'm completely confused now. Either he's lying or someone else is looking for me. !!!!!!.

Got to the bottom of this (well, sort of). Series of phone calls from me to other creditors.

I phoned Halifax through the main switchboard to ask them about the call to my neighbour. She said it won't have been them but put me through to the current account debt collectors (I used to have debt to them). They said it definitely wasn't them.

Dad then decided to tell me some useful info a bit late :p In his words "Does Wescot mean anything to you? Because that's who phoned Hilda". (Hilda's my dad's neighbour). Wescot are who bought my debt off my Style store card. I'd only just set an arrangement up with them the other day so this was odd.

I called Wescot in any case and the woman sounded as confused as me. "Nobody's called over this account" she said. It sounded like I had more than one debt collection account with wescot the way she worded it so I enquiried because I was a little in the dark on this one :-\ She did a search at both my old address and my current address which showed nothing. Still mystified, but at least I know who it was. The best explanation she had was that there must have been some sort of a mix up.

Nightmare :p I'm praying that's the end of the nightmarish calls now because AFAIK *every* creditor I owe money to has accpeted an arrangement. This totals approx £200 a month + the usual bills and car insurance. Now I need to work out which ones cost me more in interest and make additional payments on these I guess.

Good luck to you and well done for facing up to your debts - so much easier when you have to save for what you want!

the worst thing you can ever do with any debt is try and ignore it, it wont go away, it will only get worse.

afaik provided they didnt break the dpa, ringing the neighbours isnt illegal.

if you cant make repayments, dont ignore their calls, it jsut looks like you are trying toevade payment. answer the call ( means youre not paying the call costs too) and speak to them, see what you can do.

and as youve now found out, it wasnt as bad as you feared anyway ;)
