hair highlights at home - a success or not?

i have never dyed my hair before or used any kind of highlights - which is what i am considering!
the closest would be using the trevor sorbie shampoo for red heads which did leave a slight reddish tinge on my dark hair!

i would like to try the hair highlighting kits and go for a reddish/mahogony colour. i had a patch test done a year ago when i last had my hair cut:rolleyes: , and that was ok (i think paying in excess of £60 for colouring is OTT and not msing!)

any suggestions for good brands, and suggestions of good highlighting techniques as i have below the shoulder- to long, hair.

thanks:cool:

I highlight mine using a cap. By the sound of it my hair is about as long as yours. There is a bit of a knack to pulling the hair through without it all snagging so bear that in mind.

You probaby won't get the colour you are after with a highlighting kit.

I would suggest getting a Nice n Easy box and also a highlighting cap and a brush to apply the colour and a hook to pull the hair through.

Get a friend to pull the hair through for you so it is even.

Do all of the strand and allergy tests again as each colour has different chemicals in it.

Start off with a few, you can add more if you like how it looks.

Mix the colour in a bowl and only use half or a third of the whole bottle, you can store unused hair dye as long as it is not mixed.

    HTH.
