Do you think this is a good idea? If yes, what next?

Hi

I am thinking of trying to start up a small business of my own where I would make sandwiches and salads and things to sell round the local companies for their lunch. I was thinking of charging around £2 - £2.50 a sandwich and there are lots of companies around the local areas so there could potentially be quite a lot of business to generate.

The thing is I don't really know where to start in doing this. I mean I guess the first thing I should do is contact the local businesses and see if they are interested in having someone come and sell sandwiches to their employees - but providing there is an interest, what do I do next?

I mean I know nothing about the legality of all this and tax issues and things? Are there any things that anyone can think of which I should look into getting or doing?

What do others think of this a potential business idea? I only really want to make enough money to cover my bills and it is not something I want to be doing long term as I am hoping to train to become a teacher fairly soon, but I wanted something to keep me going until then and I'm sick of temping!

If anyone knows of websites that might help me on what to do, or if anyone has done anything similar then please can you help me out with some advice, at the moment this just feels very pie in the sky.

Thanks in advance.

  • I would definately ring around the companies as There is a good chance someone is already doing this. Where I work, one guys suppiles the whole building but we get requests every month from other people wanting to come in and sell.

Make sure you do your research before you shell out any funds. Oh and make sure there is a good selection if things go ahead. Vary your selection regularily too. Just some tips from a regular buyer.

You need a local authority certificate to sell food to the public, call your local environmental health department for info. They have to inspect your prep areas and the actual person takes a course and has to pass an exam (I think). Also you will need public liability insurance and business cover for your vehicle rather than just social & domestic.

There will be lots of other thngs to take into consideration and as mentioned organisations like busines link are invaluable to start up businesses.
