Watch out for debt management companies

Hi all,

Just a quick note to say avoid dodgy debt management companies that charge to agree payments with your debtors. I have a fair bit of debt (85% student debt!!!) and made the wrong desicion to start a debt management programme with Harrington Brooks (now known as AllClear Finace). They charged me about £20 a month to agree repayments with the compaines I owe money to, and this just made my debt situation worse. No one agreed to the amounts they offered on my behalf so in the meantime I got heavily charged for not paying enough money. Also, when the debtors came back and suggested amounts that I could probably afforded, I heard nothing from Harrington Brooks - they did nothing and charged me for it!

Anyway, I was probably really stupid but I was so down and desperate at the time. I never realised that in the meantime they are organisations out they that can help and do all this for FREE! Now I have agreed the amounts with all the companies I owe money to myself and I am in complete control. Unlucky for me I think I have racked up more debt because of Harrington Brooks. I hope no one makes the mistake I did which is why I am warning you all. No matter how desparate you are to get out of debt - don't pay anyone to help you!

Will hopefully be out of debt end of 2009 with what I am paying now but I aim to work my way up the career ladder and earn lots of money soon and will hopefully pay it off sooner!!!

Good luck to all those who are in debt - hope you will be out soon! :T

Cracking post. DO NOT give anyone any money (or let anyone take anything from your repayment plan) as CCCS or Payplan will do the job for you free of charge. Your creditors are also more likely to accept proposals and you'll pay your debt off quicker.
Debt as at 12th July 2006 - £61,345
    Debt free 21st Oct 2011.

    All thanks to :money:
