Where do I stand?

I am currently dealing with Booker Management Services for a Barclay's Debt they claim to have bought from them. Unfortunately I defaulted on a loan in 2000 when I was going through a difficult not to mention irresponsible period. I understand this resulted in a CCJ about 12 months later and I had only been able to make a few payments and i heard nothing after that. I have been paying Booker £100 a month for the last 12 months off a £4000 debt. They keep offering me a substantially reduced settlement figure every 6 months. How can they do this? Am i doing the right thing paying them? help anybody?

Can you afford to pay the reduced settlement figure?
Is the settlement "full and final" or "partial"?
Basically, they would rather have a lump sum of cash rather than £100pm coming in dribs and drabs. If the settlement figure is to high for you to pay in one go, you may be able to negotiate a lower amount and possibly a short repayment period.
Right now you are probanly doing the right thing. I say that because with a CCJ, the court has stated the amount you must pay (which i assume is £100pm), but if no payment is made towards a CCJ for 6 years then they should reapply to the court for permission to reinforce the judgement. If there has been no 6 year period of non payment after the CCJ was awarded, then yes - you should be making those payments.
Usually if a debt is with a DCA people can offer 25%-50% and with the original creditor 50%-75% may be accepted. As long as they agree that the settlement is a full and final settlement and you receive confirmation of this in writing before making any payment, you will probably be able to accept the lower settlement offer or negotiate your own. After falling off the gambling wagon (twice): £33,600 (24,000+ 9,600) - Original CC Debt: £7,885.91
