Cupboard Foods to have stored

I was reading through the 'so how do we cope thread '.I noticed a lot of people mentioned they had a large amount of food stored in their cupboards that would keep them going for several months and though the tough times- especailly this now.
Can anyone give me ideas of what types of foods to store so that I would only need to buy fresh veggies.
I no longer have transport so the idea that I can budget & dont need to worry about shopping would be fantastic.
many thanks for your ideas as Im a bit stuck at thinking how I could live on cupboard stores alone .

  • I try to stay stocked up on tinned goods like baked beans, kidney beans, tomatoes, fruit cocktail, peaches, pears. I prefer most veg frozen instead of in tins with the exception of green beans so I keep plenty of them on hand. Also lots of dried pasta, lentils, dried pulses, porridge oats, rice, flour, yeast, sugars, sauces (brown, tomato) seasonings, stock cubes, herbs spices etc.

I keep some tins of easy things like hot dogs, tuna, salmon. Also extra jars of red cabbage, pickled beetroot, apple sauce.

I try to stock up when I find a good price or sale and have slowly built up my pantry that way.

I'm sure someone else will be along soon to post more things I've forgotten.

You really need to learn to use what you store - learn to cook curries, chillies, bolognaise, pasta sauces, pastry, bread, biscuits, cakes, soups, etc etc.
If you're a good cook, you can make a meal out of almost anything :)

Cat, I think most of the posters above have covered what I keep in my stock piles! I do have vast amounts of flour, but I bake bread and cakes a lot!

What do you like to eat, what can you cook and what would you like to be able to cook? Perhaps you could use this as a basis for your stockcupboard, we could then make suggestions.
