Flies - Not Very Nice But ...

Options
We seem to have a problem with flies in the attic. We only ever go up there before and after Christmas Christmas to get/put back the decorations.

However, the heat from the house zooms up there and three zillion flies decide to wake up and come down into the house!

This situation has been going on for some time now, but was noticeably worse this Christmas. I promise you there are no bodies (not human at any rate!) up there. We usually go up the ladder with a can of fly spray, but would like something up there that will kill in an ongoing situation.

We have no plug socket up there so cannot plug a zapper in. So ... what is the next best - and above all effective - fly killer?

There has to be a source as the maggots need something to feed on. I would get back up there and clear everything out and have a good hunt around - maybe a dead bird or squirrel
  • Hmmm ... I was afraid someone would say that!

You've probably got an infestation of cluster flies...

That's very interesting tanglefoot. We put a new roof on an old house that we used to live in and when the old slates were removed there were loads of flies came out. Although I never ever saw any flies in the roofspace, if we had left one of the trap doors open we would have noticed a few in the house.
  • my sister had the same problem a couple of years ago. her attic is converted so believe me it was even more noticeable! I have never seen so many flies in all my life - was quite scary!

anyway she ended up getting a pest control man in to fumigate and he said it was flies hibernating in her attic and that they quite often hibernated in most peoples attics but they normally didn't notice as people are rarely up there. She hasn't had any problems with them since she got the attic fumigated so you may want to consider that.

Nope - they are not Cluster flies - "can be recognised by distinct lines or stripes behind the head, short golden-coloured hairs on the thorax, and irregular light and dark gray areas on the abdomen".

More like common or garden big black fly. I had to be pretty nifty with the fly spray and hubs and I had to beat a hasty retreat!

We have a 1930's house, and is therefore an old fashioned type of roof with rafters and slates, so I guess easy for flies to get in. However, we have not noticed it to be as bad in the past few years as it was just before Christmas.
