I didn't join mortgage free wannabes but became mortgage free in November - endowment not due to end until Oct 2016 so I guess that makes us all paid up 8 years early. Given how low mortgage and savings rates have fallen I feel somewhat of an anticlimax. Any other new mortgage frees feel this?

I wouldn't say anticlimax but I know exactly what you mean.

When I cleared my mortgage (just earlier than you) I really didn't feel the sense of achievement that I was expecting.

A few months down the line and it's slowly starting to sink in. It only really hit home when I booked a trip to Vegas and realised that there was nothing stopping me from going again the following month if I wanted to. My savings are racking up nicely too, despite not making a particular effort to save - it's just what I have left over at the end of the month.

Without a doubt, I feel more relaxed and happier having got rid of that huge burden. In particular I can let the normal work frustrations just wash over me because I no longer really need to be there.

My plan is just to 'cruise in neutral' for a few months and then have a serious think about what to do. But for now I'm content ambling on as usual, just blowing a bit more on trips abroad, and making the most of BA and Virgin's sales
