Debts - Advice Needed

Options
Hi
Im a newbie here and really could do with some advice, and im also very embarassed about my posting. I am already with a debt management plan and stupidly 2 years ago spent on catalogues and credit cards, i am now further in debt and am getting threatening letters from the catalogue companies/credit cards companies. I know ive been stupid and shouldnt of got myself further in debt, but now i dont know wot to do. Ive been ill with depression and tried to overdose as well, and i sit in my house scared in case a debt collector/balliffs come knocking on my door, i jump at every knock and look at every car/lorry that stops outside my house. I really need some advice please.

    Hi. :)

    Welcome to DFW.

Can I ask who your DMP is with?

Your really should be using one of the organisations Martin suggests here: ----> Non-profit Debt Counsellors' List

Please realise that debt collectors and creditors like to threaten all sorts. In reality there is very little they can do.

That is hard to take in when you are sitting at home scared, but believe me it is true.

Debt collectors have no powers at all. If one turned up at your house then you just tell them to "get lost". Honest. ;)

A debt collector is not the same as a bailiff. A real bailiff can only come when you have failed to pay a court ordered debt, and even then they are pretty easy to prevent from ever happening.

Many many people here have switched from a company that charges them a fee to CCCS. :)

You would need to check the terms of the agreement you are currently in and talk to CCCS about moving across, but it can be done. They should also be able to take on the newer debts.

I would suggest that you go to the CCCS website, and complete their "debt remedy" online questionnaire and/or make an appointment to speak with one of their advisors ASAP.

They are busy, so the sooner you take that step the better.

Bryom and Keely won't like it as they are making a nice profit from you, but you need to insist.

PayPlan is also the other option for a free DMP.

    Hi Mistyb4u

I'm new to this site aswell, but I have found everyone really friendly and helpful !! Not sure I'm the best person to offer advice, but I would say give either CCCS of payplan a call. I spoke to Payplan yesterday and they went through all my I&E and have worked out a DMP for me - There services are free. Ask them about changing to them. They were great, non judgemental and really quick at sorting things out for me. Hopefully my plan will start in Feb, but they gave me a reference number to tell creditors. I phoned the creditors yesterday to advise them and they have all put my accounts on hold until they hear from payplan - Yippee !!! - Hopefully no more stressful phone calls !!

So give payplan/cccs a call - they will try and help !

    Take care.

This is what Martin has to say. :)
I think this post from the Forum explains it better than I ever can:
"We, my wife and I, are on a seven-year plan with CCCS" (the Consumer Credit Counselling Service, one of my suggested agencies – Martin) "having recently changed from a commercial debt management company after hearing Martin on Radio 2's Jeremy Vine show. The simple action of swapping to the CCCS has shaved over two years off the length of our plan as the money we were paying the management company now goes to our creditors instead! Of course, that also means a financial saving of nearly eight grand over the term of the original plans 10 year period."
