What's the deal?
HMV's offering a promotional ten track compilation (tracklist below), including the likes of The Fratellis and Noah & The Whale, and iTunes is offering users one free selected download each day 'til 6th Jan.
First of all, here's the tracklisting:
1. Something is not right with me - Cold War Kids
2. Rocks And Daggers - Noah & The Whale
3. Jump Out Of Your Car - Iglu & Hartly
4. Stragglers Moon - The Fratellis
5. Obsession - Innerpartysystem
6. Moving On - Taio Cruz
7. Weather To Fly - Elbow
8. Taken Me Over - Bryn Christopher
9. Nobody's Fault - Beth Rowley
10. One Of These Days - Teddy Thompson
If this interests you, then to grab the promotional compilation from HMV...
To take advantage of iTunes' 12 days of Christmas offer you'll need the iTunes software and an iTunes store account. Once set up, it should be a simple matter of clicking 'buy' on the featured download.
Both music and videos are available through this promotion, though bear in mind that you'll need an iPod/iPhone to play them on the move as they're also DRM encrypted. You can use the iTunes software to play them on your machine.
What's on offer?
Track info remains unavailable, as does format type, and the list is subject to change (though it's been correct thus far).
Day 1 (26 Dec): The Ting Tings
Day 2 (27 Dec): Derren Brown
Day 3 (28 Dec): Katy Perry
Day 4 (29 Dec): Jason Mraz
Day 5 (30 Dec): The Script
Day 6 (31 Dec): Kylie Minogue
Day 7 (1 Jan): Lily Allen
Day 8 (2 Jan): Creature Comforts
Day 9 (3 Jan): Dido
Day 10 (4 Jan): Elbow
Day 11 (5 Jan): John Legend
Day 12 (6 Jan): The Smiths
It's worth noting that you don't need to download the file on the day to get it for free; it's possible to add it to your basket for free downloading later on. Just as long as you add it on the day you won't pay.

The HMV album
First of all, here's the tracklisting:

2. Rocks And Daggers - Noah & The Whale
3. Jump Out Of Your Car - Iglu & Hartly
4. Stragglers Moon - The Fratellis

10. One Of These Days - Teddy Thompson
If this interests you, then to grab the promotional compilation from HMV...
- Go to the page. Go to the HMV product page and add it to your basket as you would any other item.
- Get an account. You'll need to set up an account if you haven't already got one, and enter payment details. Your card won't be charged- it's just a quirk of HMV's system.
- Download it through HMV's tool. To do the downloading bit you'll have to use HMV's jukebox downloader (about 3MB), which is rather unfortunate, since it's quite clunky and won't work on Firefox or Safari browsers (Mac users can use Opera).
The music is encrypted with Digital Rights Management (DRM), so you may have to upgrade your system's DRM settings too.

Thanks for posting a great freebie.
Amazon also gave you a free code for £3 download. despite some teathing problems it did work.
Itunes freebie worked a treat, especially as i use it all the time. The HMV one didn't fare so well.0 -

Is this definite? Their help page suggests that anything bought before 2 Sept has DRM (WMA), but now tracks are non-DRMed MP3s.MSE_Lawrence wrote: »The music is encrypted with Digital Rights Management (DRM), so you may have to upgrade your system's DRM settings too.

Bit of an update - thought the best way to answer my question was to try it! For the record, I'm on Mac OS X (10.4.11) and used Safari 3.2.1 (with pop-up blockers turned off - you can do this temporarily from the "Safari" menu item, or by hitting Shift-Command-K). The files are un-DRMed 320kbps MP3 files, and downloaded fine.MSE_Lawrence wrote: »Download it through HMV's tool. So in summary:
Safari works fine.
No DRM on the tracks.
They are 320 kbps MP3s (fixed bit rate, by the looks of things).0 -
The Amazon £3 freebie changed to a £3 refund sometime in Jan, which was a bit of a pain !!

+ re the OP the HMV sampler was still online last week/or late the week before but disapeared by the time I logged in.
