Sterlingtrust not a charity

Sterling Trust (see..
http://www.sterlingtrust.org.uk/
) advertise themselves as
"
Sterling Trust is a UK debt charity formed to help people in financial difficulties to mange their unsecured debt completely free of charge.
"
(note the spelling - "mange" - )

They do not appear to be a UK charity (as at time of writing on 22nd December 2008),

I checked with the Charity Commissioners (please check yourself...)
http://www.charitycommission.gov.uk/index.asp
- they have no record of the company. Sterling Trust IS a company registered with Companies House, registered address (not that shown on their website) of STERLING TRUST UK LTD
5 JUPITER HOUSE, CALLEVA PARK
ALDERMASTON
READING
BERKSHIRE
RG7 8NN
Company No. 06378886.

I had an electronic chat with them. Eventually they confirmed that they are not a charity.

I am sure anyone who thought they were preying on the vunerable by pretending to be a charity would be just lacking in trust & suspicious unnecessarily.

Further, I've not met charities that force you to use a premium rate 'phone number (
09040 940 940) yet claim to be "completely free of charge"

Cheers!

You need to report them to the proper authorites if their adverts or paperwork is misleading.

I've not looked into this organisation, however they do not claim to be a registered charity, and therefore you would not expect to find them on the charity commission site.

Not every charity is entitled to be registered and issued with a number. A small charity can be set up legally as a company limited by guarantee. They are certainly quite up front about charging 25p per minute if you call them, but free if you use their online service. What exactly was the content of your discussion with them?

They do claim to be a charity on their web site. I have reported this to the CC.

being a charity and being registered with the useless bunch of people at the charity commission quango (paid lots of money but in reality do nothing useful) are not the same thing.

It is possible to be a charity and not be registered all you cannot do is claim to be a registered charity.

A section 30 company is a charity it is set-up with a charitable purpose and none of its profits can be distributed.

They can be a community interest company where there is some form of charitable aim but is allowed to pay shareholders.

Now did they confirm they are not a charity or not a registered charity?

It used to be that a charitable company used to have to be registered with the charity commission but this need for double registration was removed by the latest charities act when all the reasons for double registration were removed (mainly tax benefits).
I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.

A Community Interest Company can never be charitable, nor describe itself as a charity.
The double registration of which you speak which was introduced in the 2006 Charities Act is not yet in force - the CC are still consulting on it.
This organisation claims to be a charity on its website. It may have charitable objects and be exempt from registration as its income is under £5000, but it cannot therefore describe itslef as a charity.
