B&Q Kitchen Sale - Beware

Anyone buying a kitchen from B&Q beware! Between summer and autumn of this year they have doubled their kitchen range prices in order to promote a 50% off sale at Xmas. I’m half way through a kitchen mod and this has stopped me in my tracks.

Earlier in the year I purchased some kitchen cabinets and doors from B&Q's Summer 2008 catalogue. I have been back recently to buy some more items and the prices in their Autumn 2008 catalogue have exactly doubled!

So don't be conned into thinking it's a good deal!

See below for example pages from the the autumn and summer catologues. All the autumn prices are twice the summer prices!

No different to any other retailer of kitchen units (and the rest of the furniture industry in general).

Anyway, very little competition for them now that MFI has gone.

    Homebase kitchens are hilariously expensive.

Any kithen specialists' kitchens are hilariously expensive.

No different, but it shouldn't be accepted because it catches people out. See this thread below:

    Second rule of Moneysaving:

Always buy on PRICE, not on DISCOUNT.

The first rule is 'Don't buy it unless you actually need it'

(good rules for the January 'Sales' in general)

When shopping for a kitchen, remember that (with few exceptions), all you are buying is a load of chipboard. Then compare prices. It focuses the mind a little!

  • We installed an Ikea kitchen this year - really nice rigid units and drawers. The builder thought they were a lot better than B&Q! Self-closing drawers are great.

Focus on the quality of the installation first, ie. choose someone who comes with a good recommendation. Not an unknown installer sub-contracted by a kitchen retailer.

Then focus on the quality of the doors, eg.

    low price = vinyl wrap
    medium price = wood veneer
    high price = solid wood.

Lastly consider the quality of the cabinets. Unless you spend a fortune they are all made of chipboard and all constructed the same way.

Pre-assembled or 'rigid' kitchens always get sold as better than flatpack, although this again is a bit of a myth. Even in the factory they're all constructed the same way. Flatpack requires assembly at home and this takes time and costs money. It's probably adds 50% onto the time for an installer to erect flatpacks, ie. they prefer pre-assembled.
  • ordered 20+ doors and draw fronts . on 24th aug 2010. for delivery 24 sept. several items missing. one glazed door completely different in colour and glass style to the other 2 glazed doors.
I called after the delivery. I Was told 400mm doors out of stock at that time. The glass door will be replaced along with the other missing 300mm door & the four 400mm on the 5th oct.
stayed in again this time only the 300mm missing door arrived. no letter saying where the other items where.
so again phoned twice no result told 400mm still out of stock will be 5th nov for these items no answer on the glazed door. Asked for call back.
got a call back after 20 mins on hold getting the four missing doors 4oomm on Thursday 7th oct still nothing on the glazed door.
My advice avoid ordering anything from B&Q that’s not in stock off the shelf had same problems with a shed 4 months ago cancelled that order and went else where. I Should have learnt then. Silly me.
