Just had an email from Waterstones:

Edited to say that the discount code does work, but possibly not on The Tales of Beedle the Bard as it is a pre-order title- some have reported (in another thread) that they had to order a min of £5 worth of books. I have phoned the customer services about this as there is nothing in the small print excluding pre-orders and am waiting for a call back.

It does work - just seems to be on a limited selection of books.
For instance:
Making Money - Discworld No. 31 works
The Folklore of Discworld doesn't work
And yet they are both down as 30% off on this page:

Right, it seems that all books in the Christmas Price Check promotion qualify for this code.
Beedle the Bard isn't part of this promotion, which is why the code doesn't work for it.0 -
