Credit Cards after BR?

I'm going to file for BR on Monday.

Apart from USL and CC that will be in my BR, I had a CC with a £2K credit limit (unused) which I have now closed. a Marbles CC with a £500 limit & no balance (unused), and a Halifax CC also with a £500 limit (was £5500) that they told me they were closing in the same letter that told me my credit limit was being reduced:confused:.

My question is this should I try to close or confirm that the Halifax CC is closed? Halifax are my creditors for both USL and overdraft, so I don't think they'll want me anyway.

Could I keep the Marbles card as it's limit is only £500? This would only be used for extreme emergencies (where they don't accept electron for example), and/or for paying for items over £100 to get better security/guarantee on goods from companies going bust etc. I would only do this if I knew I had the money in my Cashminder account. Would the OR allow this? Marbles might not want me anyway!

Any thoughts?

ALL credit cards you hold will have to be put on your BR forms regardless of a nil balance, the OR will write to them all and the accounts will be closed.

I would be surprised if they let you keep them to be honest as they hate us BR's. I even had a letter from Abbey when i went BR saying they dont offer that account for people like me (Charming) they used to be happy when i had saving in there i remember and it was also just a savings account.

I got to ask why would you want one? i would never have one ever again i would be too scared to have one i really would and sticking with my Co-op Electron or my Virgin PP Card.

Hi, went BR 3/10, co-op cshminder set up and running nicely, direct debits being paid fine, and internet access loads better than my old bank.

Saw you mention Virgin PP card- is this something that can be loaded with cash that you can use for example to hire a car abroad- my Dad is ill in Spain and I need to see him, ( Can book cheap flights on my electron - even with no c/c fee which is a novelty ) but someone's told me you can only hire a car with a credit card otherwise they need a massive cash deposit- which I obviously don't have.

If so, how do you get one pre-discharge and are there fees?
  • Sorry to barge in to someone else's thread, but I have a card on an RBS account of my wife's. Do I simply have to get taken off her account or would she stand to lose it? It doesn't really matter which way because it's got a zero balance.

    Good question Mummy4 (bump),

It's for those kind of reasons that I wondered if I'd be allowed to keep one as it's under £500. But if that's the case, what are the other options?

Are there any other prepayment cards etc. that might give options that an Electron card might not have, or be accepted?

So k2nga, what is a Virgin PP card?

    Cheers, OD

I doubt you'll be allowed to keep the marbles card...they were one of my creditors & soon as they knew about the bankruptcy account closed straight away

  • Yes. Prime card from IDT. Rates are expensive as their are fees to top up and 2% transaction fee (minimum £1). But you can reload it at any 'pay point' and it's a mastercard, so most places that accept mastercard accept it. I have had bad credit for a long time, so that's what I use - also you don't run the risk of spending what you haven't got. https://www.idtprime.com you can buy them in most high streets just look for a poster in the shop with the idt logo. The card costs £3. You then give them extra money in increments of £5 and they load it on, so e.g. you could give them £33 and have £30 loaded. Once you have it you can go online once you've 'activated' - AND registered it which is a seperate process, and get it switched to a 'reload card' this means you can just 'top it up' at any paypoint.

So it ends up costing you about £5 for the reloadable card (£3 for the card, £2 to get it upgraded to reloadable), plus 2% reload fee whenever you top it up (minimum .80p) and 2% transaction fee when you use it (minimum .50p maximum £1).

I guess the rates are a bit high, but I wouldn't be able to use any service online without mine, so for me it's a great service, I don't even have a bank account at the moment - but hopefully will have once I sort all my finances out which I'm just starting to do thanks to the site.
