I work for a automation co. and we sell systems to the likes of Royal Mail and the parcel carriers. The idea of these businesses is to reduce the cost of shipping a parcel or letter, hence they automate! Consequently they process all of the 24hr service parcels and letters with all of the 48 hr service parcels (e.g. 1st class and 2nd class) which means both services recieve the same treatment, and in actual fact it would cost them more if they had to store the 48 hr service parcels for an additional 24 hrs than to delivery it in 24 hrs.
So when you are thinking 24 / 48 hr delivery, choose the 48 hr because it recieves the same processing as the 24 hr. (I cannot guarantee that a 1st class stamp recieves the same treatment as a 2nd class but hopefully a royal mail employee can? - your job should be safe thanks to the unions!) But for the parcel handlers this is definitely true...... They rely on the public perception of a better service......all of the corporate users know that 48 hr will get there in 24!

I sort of suspected this happened with packages I have sent to my daughters at university. Mind you, that was before the post office printed up a label rather than stick stamps on. Anyway, first or second class, everything takes >2days to get to Norwich!0
